Brief Description of Duties
University of the District of Columbia’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) invites applications for the position of Visiting Assistant Professor Electrical and Computer Engineering for Computer Engineering program; The appointment is expected to be effective immediately.
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is searching for a faculty colleague who is committed to student learning and professional development, collaborative research, growth and quality of our degree programs and research portfolio. An earned doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering or closely related field is required. Expertise is preferred in digital signal processing, artificial intelligence, control, electronics, and communication. The candidate intends to be an outstanding teacher and scholar committed to working with diverse student body and community. The position involves undergraduate and graduate teaching, student advising, and research in electrical and computer engineering and related fields including the broad areas of computer engineering. The position is expected to be filled at the assistant professor tenure-track faculty.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Faculty duties include teaching undergraduate and graduate students, conducting high-quality research by collaborating closely with the department’s established teams, participating in research, performing academic duties, university services, and professional services, and contributing to maintaining ABET accreditation.
Minimum Job Requirements
Candidates must have a doctoral degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, or related disciplines with a focus on artificial intelligence, computer engineering control, electronics, and communication. Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae (with a listing of academic publications, separated according to refereed journals vs conference proceedings vs conference presentations), research statement, teaching statement and a statement of commitment to advancing equity and fostering an inclusive and diverse community in academia.
Required Competencies
- The candidate must have a doctorate in Electrical and Computer Engineering, or closely related field and a strong record of teaching, research, and scholarly activities commensurate with appointment at the rank of assistant or associate professor.
- The candidate’s field of expertise is preferred in computer engineering, artificial intelligence, control, electronics, and communication.
- Excellent leadership, management, interpersonal, verbal, and written communication, financial management and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of the best models and practices available to encourage student success. This will require regular research in this area, specific training, as necessary, involvement in relevant forums and conferences and regular reading of higher education news sources.
- Ability to exercise, initiative and creativity in implementing responsibilities.
- Dedication to students, commitment to excellence in creating and providing student support services and ensuring student success.
- Candidates should have a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching. Demonstrated knowledge and experience with ABET accreditation is preferred but not required given enthusiasm to learn. The candidate must have exceptional interpersonal communication and management skills.
- Commitment to working in a collaborative environment with other team members. The successful applicant will work closely with the Electrical and Computer Engineering faculty and department chair and other faculty members within the SEAS.
- Exceptional interpersonal communication and management skills are necessary to promote programs and to sustain strong student enrollment.
- Faculty duties include teaching undergraduate and graduate students, conducting high-quality research by collaborating closely with the department and SEAS faculties, participating in and developing externally funded research projects, and performing academic duties, university services, and professional services.
Candidates should have strong practical expertise in Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability in Technology, Policy & Practice, and Education & Awareness of information assurance and incorporating protection, detection, and reaction capabilities.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by National Education Association (NEA) and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.
Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.
