Manufacturing Safety Engineer, Megapack

The Manufacturing Safety Engineer will be a full-time member of the Production Engineering team at Megafactory California, reporting to Matthew Crisp. Accountability for safety on existing processes, rapid safety-driven automation changes, and new equipment deployment sits with Production Engineering leadership. The engineer partners with EHS on risk assessments, safety buyoffs, and audit readiness. The role ensures the safety of existing processes, quick automation changes to address emergent safety concerns, and the prioritization of safety in the development and deployment of new manufacturing equipment.

Design, develop, and implement safety system upgrades on automated manufacturing equipment using Siemens SIMATIC Integrated Safety, TwinSAFE, and PILZ solutions Lead machine safety across the equipment lifecycle, from concept and design through build, commissioning, FAT/SAT, and sustaining production Perform hazard analysis and risk assessments for automation and robotics, including SIL/PL determination, safety function validation, and safety buyoffs with EHS Ensure compliance with Tesla safety standards and IEC 61508, ISO 13849, ANSI B11, OSHA, NFPA, and RIA through systematic validation and documentation Design and validate safety control systems, including safety PLC programming, safe data communication, safe machine states, and functional testing of safety devices Develop and maintain safety documentation, including safety function diagrams, risk assessment reports, and safety manuals, and manage change control for safety-critical systems Partner with Controls, Equipment, NPI, and external vendors to integrate safety into new product and process designs from inception Evolve internal safety standards from incidents, near-misses, and audits; serve as the machine safety expert during safety events, including troubleshooting and root cause analysis

Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronic, or Computer Science Engineering, or equivalent experience Minimum of 5 years of experience in industrial automation with a focus on safety systems in manufacturing environments
Experience with Siemens SIMATIC Integrated Safety, TwinSAFE, and PILZ safety PLCs and architectures
Deep understanding of IEC 61508, ISO 13849, and ANSI B11, plus OSHA, NFPA, RIA, and internal Tesla safety standards
Experience designing and validating safety functions, including safety PLC programming, safe data communication, and safe machine states Proficiency in conducting Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment (HARA), SIL/PL determination, and safety function validation Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and Certified Machinery Safety Expert (CMSE) preferred Willingness to support off-shift, weekend, and ramp-period operations as needed to ensure safety system readiness

Expected Compensation $93,600 - $140,400/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits
