Job Summary

We are seeking a Staff Engineer - Performance Engineering to provide technical leadership and drive performance engineering excellence across multiple products and platforms within Merchandise Solutions. This role will be responsible for defining performance strategies, establishing performance engineering standards, driving observability practices, and partnering with Product, Development, QA, SRE, and Architecture teams to ensure applications are scalable, reliable, and performant.

The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in performance testing, bottleneck analysis, observability, and performance optimization, while serving as a trusted advisor and mentor across engineering teams. The role requires significant hands-on experience with NeoLoad , Splunk , AppDynamics/Application Insights , performance engineering best practices, and modern software architectures.

Key Responsibilities

·       Define and execute enterprise performance engineering strategies, standards, and best practices across multiple products and teams.

·       Partner with Product Management, Architects, and Engineering teams on NFR requirement gathering , workload modelling, capacity planning, and performance benchmarking.

·       Design and execute load, stress, endurance, scalability, and reliability testing using NeoLoad and other enterprise performance engineering tools.

·       Develop and maintain reusable performance testing assets and frameworks including the in house PTAF (Performance Test Automation Framework) .

·       Lead performance testing efforts across multiple products and initiatives simultaneously.

·       Analyze system performance, identify bottlenecks, perform root cause analysis, and drive optimization recommendations across applications, infrastructure, databases, and integrations.

·       Utilize monitoring and observability platforms ( Splunk, AppDynamics, App Insights, Dynatrace ) to monitor system health and correlate performance findings.

·       Partner with Product, Development, QA, SRE, Infrastructure, and Architecture teams to embed performance engineering throughout the development lifecycle.

·       Create performance engineering scorecards, dashboards, and executive-level performance analysis reports.

·       Drive performance regression automation using CI/CD platforms such as Jenkins and Azure DevOps.

·       Establish and maintain performance baselines, workload models, performance benchmarks, and release readiness criteria.

·       Mentor engineers and provide technical guidance on performance testing, analysis, scripting, monitoring, and troubleshooting.

·       Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, observability practices, and performance engineering methodologies.

·       Influence architectural decisions and provide recommendations to improve scalability, resiliency, and overall system performance.

Required Skills & Qualifications

·       Minimum 10+ years of experience in Performance Engineering, Performance Testing, or related engineering disciplines.

·       Strong expertise with NeoLoad and enterprise performance testing methodologies.

·       Experience with performance monitoring and observability tools such as Splunk, AppDynamics, App Insights, Dynatrace , or equivalent.

·       Extensive experience performing end-to-end performance testing lifecycle activities, including NFR analysis, workload modelling, test planning, execution, monitoring, troubleshooting, and reporting.

·       Strong experience in identifying performance bottlenecks and implementing optimization recommendations.

·       Advanced understanding of system architectures , cloud environments, distributed systems, APIs, databases, and integrations.

·       Strong experience with REST API performance testing and API monitoring.

·       Strong experience creating and supporting bulk test datasets and complex performance test scenarios.

·       Strong experience writing and optimizing SQL queries .

·       Experience using Git/GitHub , source control practices, and performance testing asset management.

·       Experience working within Agile / SAFe environments utilizing JIRA and Confluence .

·       Strong communication, presentation, stakeholder management, and mentoring capabilities.

·       Demonstrated ability to influence technical direction across teams without formal authority.

·       Ability to manage multiple concurrent initiatives while driving engineering excellence.

Preferred Qualifications

·       Experience with scripting languages such as Python, Shell, JavaScript, Java , or similar.

·       Knowledge of containerized environments including Docker and Kubernetes .

·       Experience integrating performance testing into CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins and Azure DevOps.

·       Experience implementing observability and monitoring standards across organizations.

·       Experience establishing performance engineering governance, standards, and reusable frameworks.

·       Exposure to Maven, Selenium, Tosca, or similar enterprise technologies.

·       Experience mentoring engineers and building organizational performance engineering capabilities.

·       Relevant cloud, performance engineering, or observability certifications.

Nice to Have

·       Conducting performance engineering maturity assessments.

·       Building Communities of Practice (CoPs) or engineering standards programs.

·       Experience supporting large-scale retail.

·       Knowledge of SRE principles, resiliency engineering, and capacity planning.
