ABOUT OUR SUMMER INTERNSHIP

At DI, an internship isn't about sitting on the sidelines.

Our summer interns become part of the team and have the opportunity to contribute to real client projects alongside professionals in their field. You'll see how ideas move from concept to design, development, fabrication and installation—and how different disciplines come together to create something remarkable.

Throughout the summer, you'll build practical skills, learn from experienced mentors, make connections across DI and leave with meaningful experience you can take back to school and into your career.

You'll work hard, learn a lot and have some fun along the way.

CREATIVE TECHNOLOGY INTERN SUMMARY

As a Creative Technology Intern, you'll explore what happens when software leaves the screen and becomes part of a physical experience.

You'll work alongside DI's Creative Technology team to contribute code to real client projects, build interactive prototypes and experiment with emerging technologies. You'll learn how web applications can communicate with physical hardware like sensors, cameras, interactive displays and lighting systems to create experiences people can see, touch and interact with.

You'll also have access to DI's fully equipped technology workshop and be paired with an experienced developer who will serve as a mentor throughout the summer.

What You May Work On

- Contribute to web applications, interactive experiences and prototypes for real DI client projects

- Assist with front-end development using modern technologies, frameworks, tools and workflows

- Explore ways software can interact with physical hardware, including sensors, cameras, displays and LED lighting systems

- Build and test prototypes in DI's technology workshop

- Apply user experience and design principles to interactive experiences

- Use Git and collaborative development practices while working alongside experienced developers

- Participate in project conversations, problem-solving and testing as ideas move toward finished experiences

- Explore emerging technologies and experiment with new ways to connect the digital and physical worlds

WHAT YOULL LEARN

By the end of the summer, you'll have greater exposure to:

- Developing software for real-world, client-facing experiences

- Building web applications that interact with physical hardware

- Working with sensors, cameras, interactive displays and LED lighting systems

- Professional software development workflows, version control and quality assurance

- Prototyping, testing and iterating on interactive concepts

- Solving technical challenges within physical environments

- Collaborating with designers, developers, engineers, fabricators and other disciplines

- Understanding how technology, design and fabrication come together to create immersive experiences

- Taking an idea from early exploration toward something people can actually experience

WHO WERE LOOKING FOR

You don't need to know everything yet—that's why you're here. But you'll be most successful if you bring curiosity, initiative and a willingness to jump in and learn.

We're especially interested in students with:

- Experience building interactive web applications using HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript, either vanilla JavaScript or modern frameworks

- Familiarity with Git/version control and collaborative coding practices

- An interest in creative technology, interactive experiences, physical computing or emerging technologies

- Strong problem-solving skills and a willingness to experiment

- The ability to adapt and "go where needed" in a fast-moving creative environment

- A collaborative, positive and professional approach to working with others

- Comfort trying something new, learning from what doesn't work and trying again

- Strong communication, organization and attention to detail

Students pursuing Computer Science, Interactive Digital Media, Electrical Engineering or a related field are encouraged to apply.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

The Creative Technology Internship is a full-time, hourly (non-exempt) summer internship based onsite at Dimensional Innovations' Kansas City-area headquarters in Overland Park, Kansas.

Summer 2027 Internship Dates: June 7th - August 6th
Application Deadline: December 31st - but the earlier the better, these internships fill quickly
Schedule: Monday–Friday, approximately 40 hours per week
Location: Overland Park, Kansas
Work Arrangement: Onsite

A portfolio or examples of your work are required to be considered for the Creative Technology Internship.

We want to see what you've experimented with, built or created. Student projects and personal projects are absolutely welcome.
