Job Title: Phlebotomist Job Description
The Phlebotomist performs high-quality blood draws and specimen collections while providing clear, courteous explanations to patients of all ages. This role is responsible for accurately labeling, processing, and storing specimens according to established procedures and regulatory guidelines, as well as maintaining accurate records and updating patient information. The Phlebotomist ensures specimen integrity from collection through transport and supports the laboratory by handling inquiries and reading laboratory results over the phone.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture blood draws and other specimen collections, including urine and fecal samples, in a safe, accurate, and efficient manner.
- Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients, ensuring they understand the process and feel at ease.
- Collect and store specimens according to established procedures and protocol to maintain specimen integrity.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure all specimens correspond to the correct test orders.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the specific test order.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
- Operate a centrifuge to process specimens according to laboratory standards.
- Package specimens securely and appropriately for transport, following specific protocols to maintain specimen stability and integrity.
- Store specimen samples at the required temperatures and place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling.
- Maintain accurate records by entering and updating patient information and specimen data in the system.
- Perform specimen processing activities, including receiving, organizing, and preparing samples for analysis or transport.
- Register patients accurately and completely, ensuring all required information is captured.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and follow all safety and regulatory procedures related to specimen collection and handling.
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to callers, providing information in a clear and professional manner.
- Collaborate with another phlebotomist at the location to ensure continuous coverage and efficient workflow.
Essential Skills
- 02+ years of experience performing venipunctures.
- Demonstrated ability to perform venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Proficiency in phlebotomy, including blood draws and specimen collection from pediatric to geriatric patients.
- Experience with specimen processing, including centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and preparing specimens for transport.
- Ability to accurately label, match, and verify laboratory requisition forms and specimen tubes.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for data entry and record maintenance.
- Experience drawing blood and collecting specimens from patients across a wide age range, including pediatric and geriatric populations.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Knowledge of and ability to comply with OSHA and DEP regulations related to laboratory and specimen handling.
- Ability to update patient information and maintain accurate records in a timely and organized manner.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Hard stick patient knowledge preferred, including experience drawing blood from patients with difficult venous access.
- Pediatrics experience preferred, with comfort and skill in working with children.
- Geriatrics experience preferred, with sensitivity to the needs of older adults.
- Experience registering patients and managing patient information in a clinical or laboratory setting.
- Experience with specimen processing beyond basic collection, including handling, storage, and preparation for transport.
- Strong communication skills to clearly explain procedures and read laboratory results over the phone.
- Ability to work collaboratively with another phlebotomist to support shared coverage and workload.
Work Environment
The Phlebotomist works in a clinical or laboratory setting alongside one other phlebotomist, providing shared coverage for the location. The environment involves frequent interaction with patients of all ages, from pediatric to geriatric, and requires consistent use of venipuncture equipment such as straight needles, butterfly needles, and centrifuges. The role includes handling and processing specimens under controlled temperature conditions, preparing samples for transport, and working with computer systems and Microsoft Office Suite for patient registration and record maintenance. The position follows established procedures and protocols to ensure safety, regulatory compliance, and specimen integrity throughout the collection and processing workflow.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Fairbanks, AK.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $21.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
