JOB SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Director of the College Access Center, the College and Career Advisor will provide comprehensive advising and support to community members as they pursue their educational and career goals. The College and Career Advisor will guide students and adults through postsecondary pathways, evaluates academic and career options, provide application support, and connect participants to resources and opportunities aligned with their interests and goals.
The College and Career Advisor is responsible for providing individualized counseling, coordinating college access events and activities, facilitating meaningful workshops, co-leading the College Explorers program, data management and reporting, and cultivating relationships with colleges, community organizations, workforce partners, and other external stakeholders. Through direct advising, strategic partnerships, data-informed practices, and community engagement, the College and Career Advisor will help expand access to meaningful postsecondary opportunities and ensures participants receive the guidance, resources, and support needed to successfully navigate their educational and career pathways.
Job Duties include but not limited to :
College and Career Advising
- Manage a caseload of 90 – 100 young adults and adults, providing individualized guidance on postsecondary education, career pathways, vocational programs, admissions, scholarships, fellowships, and financial aid.
- Manage the college application, admissions, and financial aid process for everyone on the caseload, ensuring they meet critical deadlines and maximize postsecondary opportunities, including support with college essays, and postsecondary planning.
- Support young adults with successful financial aid application submission process including but not limited to Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), NY State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), New York State Dream Act, CSS Profile, New York State Excelsior Scholarship, and other scholarship applications,
- Maintain current knowledge of CUNY, SUNY, private colleges, certificate and workforce pathways, admissions requirements, SAT/ACT testing, and financial aid processes.
- Coordinate with the Success Program (Persistence Team) to facilitate enrollment and a seamless transition into the program that provides personalized support in addressing academic and non-academic barriers to persistence .
- Ensure youth and young adults are connected to relevant support programs based on their postsecondary plans and needs.
Academic Year Programming
- Lead recruitment, outreach, orientation, and enrollment for the College Explorers Program, an early college awareness cohort for 10 th –12 th grade students.
- Plan, coordinate, and facilitate presentations, workshops, engagement events, college fairs, career exploration activities, and post-secondary events, including but not limited to:
College Explorers sessions covering college access, career exploration, college applications, financial aid, alternative pathways, and postsecondary planning.
- workshops addressing college access, first-generation student needs, advocacy, mental health, college essay preparation, career exploration, and financial literacy.
- Coordinate college representative visits and alternative postsecondary program presentations at the Center and organize and chaperone college visits and related field trips.
- Participate in internal committees and contribute to organization-wide initiatives throughout the academic year.
Data Management and Analysis
- Maintain accurate, timely, and complete records and program data in Salesforce and related reporting systems.
- Track, evaluate, and report on the caseloads and program outcomes using Salesforce to support continuous program improvement and growth.
- Monitor student progress toward college and career readiness and post-secondary benchmarks.
- Analyze data to identify trends, evaluate program effectiveness, and inform program planning and decision-making.
- Ensure accurate and timely completion of organizational, grant, and reporting requirements.
Partnerships and Networking
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with colleges, financial aid offices, workforce partners, community organizations, high schools, nonprofits, and other external partners to expand opportunities, strengthen partnerships, and advocate for your caseload.
- Liaise with schools, community organizations, and partner agencies to provide early awareness workshops, individual student support, and community outreach.
- Represent the organization at college fairs, community events, conferences, professional development opportunities, and advocacy and networking events.
- Stay current on trends, policies, and best practices in college access, postsecondary education, and student success.
- Perform other duties as requested.
Qualifications
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelors degree required.
- Experience in college access, college counseling, secondary education, youth development, higher education, or an educational nonprofit setting.
- Demonstrated experience advising students through college admissions, financial aid, and postsecondary planning processes.
- Knowledge of the U.S. higher education system, particularly CUNY, SUNY, community colleges, private colleges, certificate programs, and workforce pathways.
- Knowledge of FAFSA, NYS TAP, scholarships, college application systems, college essays, and financial aid processes.
- Familiarity with the NYC Department of Education, CUNY/SUNY systems, and current trends and changes in the college admissions landscape.
- Experience supporting students from historically underserved, low- to moderate-income communities, first-generation, immigrant, refugee/newcomer, and other underrepresented communities.
- Experience facilitating workshops related to college access, postsecondary planning, career exploration, financial aid, and financial literacy.
- Demonstrate a commitment to professional development, community building, and community organizing as strategies for social change.
- Experience developing and maintaining relationships with schools, colleges, community organizations, workforce partners, and other external stakeholders.
- Experience collecting, managing, and analyzing data to inform program planning and decision-making.
- Strong organizational, project management, strategic planning, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced nonprofit environment.
- Ability to build authentic relationships with youth/adults, families, college partners, and community stakeholders.
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office and student information or data management systems; Salesforce experience preferred.
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and develop creative, solution-oriented approaches to complex challenges.
- Willingness to work occasional evenings and on occasion for programs and events.
