About this role
Tesla is seeking a highly motivated Metrology System Engineer to develop and implement cutting-edge inline metrology systems for our advanced battery cell manufacturing lines (powder, film, and electrode processing lines). This role will be instrumental in developing, optimizing, and scaling up metrology tools and methods, working within a cross-functional team to take new battery designs from concept to high-volume production.
The battery cell is a critical component of Tesla vehicles and energy storage systems. This position offers the opportunity to make significant contributions to our products while working in a fast-paced, innovative environment. The ideal candidate is driven, detail-oriented, and ready to push their limits, as they join a highly motivated and capable team to make unbelievable things into reality.
- Drive metrology systems installation and commissioning on current and new production lines, including review and coordination of field wiring, pneumatic, and fluid piping, while working with suppliers
- Define and review metrology specifications to enable gauge-capable tools that support production processes
- Perform gage capability, tool matching, and measurement uncertainty studies for metrology tools
- Partner across equipment, process, quality, production, and safety teams to integrate metrology systems into production
- Support and drive metrology measurements for engineering DOEs and structured experiments to relate metrology results to cell performance and process optimization
- Train technicians on the maintenance and repair of metrology systems
- Apply advanced statistics, data analysis, visualization, and presentation to validate metrology performance and its impact on downstream and cell performance
- Conduct structured root cause investigations to resolve inline integration issues and improve system reliability, performance, and process–metrology interaction
- Develop documentation to define and standardize metrology processes for engineering, quality, and production teams
- Support development and deployment of inline manufacturing metrology solutions from proof-of-concept (offline/lab) to high-volume production, including hands-on work with pilot process equipment
- Degree in Materials Science, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Science, Automation Engineering, or equivalent experience
- 3+ years relevant metrology and sensor development/integration experience
- Expertise in at least two of the following: (1) Metrology system development and fleet management (e.g., semiconductor), including Six Sigma and statistical methodologies (gauge/process capability); (2) At least one material characterization technique (SEM, XRF, ICP, PSA, microscopy, etc.) with system- and module-level troubleshooting to meet metrology specifications; (3) Optics and optical sensor development across IR to UV, with simulation experience (e.g., Zemax); (4) X-ray characterization tools, including source/detector modification, selection, experimentation, and simulation; (5) Image processing, big data, and advanced analytics to investigate data quality issues
- Strong foundation in engineering principles and their application to manufacturing equipment/process development
- Familiar with GD&T for equipment design, SolidWorks, and blueprint interpretation
- Familiar with Six sigma concepts such as process and gage capability concepts and requirements
- Proficiency with at least one statistical software package (e.g. JMP, Minitab)
- Proficiency with data acquisition, analysis, and visualization (e.g., MySQL, Flux); programming for data processing (Python, Go, etc.). PLC coding (Siemens, Beckhoff, Rockwell) is a plus
- Excellent documentation and reporting for installations, commissioning, and experiments; strong communication with the ability to simplify technical concepts for non-technical and cross-functional partners; proven structured, data-driven root cause analysis and problem solving
- Experience in high-volume manufacturing in one or more of the following is highly desired: battery cell engineering, battery quality control, dry powder metrology/handling/processing, roll-to-roll film processing and metrology (including web path design), battery manufacturing (Li-ion or other chemistry), or manufacturing engineering
