Job Description

AECOM’s Ontario Environment team is hiring an Environmental Compliance Inspector /  Monitor to support our growing portfolio of construction environmental compliance and monitoring work across Northern Ontario. Preference will be given to candidates based in Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, Blind River, or other communities along the North Shore of Lake Huron ; however, we are open to qualified candidates located elsewhere Ontario. The position will involve field assignments at project sites throughout the region. This is a new position.

The successful candidate will have 3+ years of relevant experience, including environmental inspection, construction monitoring or environmental compliance at active construction sites. The role will involve independently managing assigned work areas, interpreting project environmental requirements, inspecting construction activities and mitigation measures, documenting compliance, identifying emerging environmental risks and supporting timely resolution of environmental issues.

Strong field judgement, clear documentation and the ability to communicate environmental requirements effectively in an active construction environment are important for this role. Intermediate inspectors may also provide guidance to junior environmental staff and support coordination of inspection activities across multiple work fronts. Field assignments may involve remote locations, rugged terrain, variable weather, early starts, weekends and extended travel depending on project schedules.

Key roles for the position include:

•  Conduct environmental compliance inspections at active construction sites and independently manage assigned inspection areas or work fronts.

•  Review and apply environmental management plans, environmental protection plans, permits, approvals, environmental commitments and project-specific mitigation requirements.

•  Verify implementation and effectiveness of environmental mitigation measures during construction.

•  Inspect erosion and sediment controls, watercourse crossings, wetlands, access roads, clearing areas, work pads and other environmentally sensitive areas.

•  Identify environmental risks, non-compliances or emerging issues and communicate required actions to appropriate project personnel.

•  Work constructively with contractors and construction teams to address environmental issues in the field.

•  Document findings through daily reports, photographs, mapping and electronic field data collection systems, and track corrective actions through closure.

•  Support environmental incident response, investigation, documentation and follow-up.

•  Coordinate with discipline specialists where issues require additional ecological, aquatic, permitting or regulatory expertise.

•  Support weekly and monthly environmental reporting, compliance tracking and performance metrics, and provide field guidance to junior inspectors.

•  Follow and promote AECOM health and safety requirements and project-specific safety procedures.

Qualifications

Must Have Skills/Experience (Including any required Certifications):

•  Post-secondary degree or diploma in environmental science, environmental technology, biology, ecology, natural resources or a related discipline from a recognized University or College.

•  2+ years of relevant experience in environmental inspection, construction monitoring, environmental compliance or a related field.

•  Demonstrated experience working at active construction sites.

•  Experience interpreting environmental management plans, mitigation requirements, permits, approvals or environmental commitments.

•  Working knowledge of erosion and sediment control practices and construction-related environmental risks.

•  Ability to identify environmental issues, evaluate field conditions and determine when concerns require escalation or specialist input.

•  Strong written documentation, reporting and interpersonal communication skills.

•  Ability to work independently and manage environmental responsibilities across active construction areas.

•  Valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence.

•  Ability and willingness to travel throughout Northern Ontario and work variable schedules based on construction activities.

Preferred Skills/Experience:

•  3+ years of environmental construction monitoring experience.

•  Previous experience supporting transmission lines, substations, pipelines, transportation, mining or other major infrastructure projects.

•  Experience with erosion and sediment control inspection and implementation.

•  Knowledge of federal and Ontario environmental legislation and regulatory requirements applicable to construction projects.

•  Experience with protected species mitigation and monitoring, environmental incident response and corrective action tracking.

•  Experience with Survey123, Field Maps, GIS, GPS or similar field data collection systems.

•  CISEC, CAN-CISEC, CPESC or related erosion and sediment control training/certification.

•  Valid Standard First Aid + CPR and/or construction safety training such as Working at Heights.

•  Experience mentoring or coordinating junior field staff.

•  Experience working in remote locations or Northern Ontario.
