Program Overview:
Our Loan Closing Internship Program offers a dynamic 10-week experience designed to provide undergraduate students with a comprehensive introduction to commercial loan closing, loan documentation, regulatory compliance, and career opportunities within the Loan Closing Department. Interns will train with experienced professionals in Commercial Loan Closing, gaining hands-on exposure to the full loan closing lifecycle, from request intake and document review through closing preparation and funding support.
Throughout the program, we prioritize your professional growth by providing structured training, mentorship, and meaningful assignments. You will develop foundational knowledge of commercial borrower structures, guaranties, collateral, flood and insurance requirements, loan approvals, documentation quality, and the systems used to support accurate and timely closings. Key program components include:
· Onboarding Week: Kick off your internship with orientation, training sessions, networking with peers and SouthState leaders, and an introduction to our commercial lending and banking operations.
· Loan Closing Liaison Training: Learn how closing requests are reviewed for completeness, prioritized, scheduled, and assigned. Gain exposure to borrower and guarantor structures, commitment letters, collateral requirements, flood documentation, insurance, title work, and loan approvals.
· Commercial Loan Closer Training: Work alongside experienced team members to understand how commercial loan documents are prepared, reviewed, and coordinated for closing. Gain exposure to LaserPro, closing instructions, settlement documentation, funding support, and lien perfection requirements.
· Mentorship & Support: Partner with experienced Loan Closing professionals who provide guidance, answer questions, and offer feedback to help you grow professionally.
· Process Improvement & Technology: Participate in projects involving workflow efficiency, reporting, automation, and artificial intelligence while gaining exposure to nCino, LaserPro, SharePoint, and DocuSign.
· Networking Opportunities: Connect with peers, employees, and leaders across Loan Closing, Commercial Lending, Credit Administration, Compliance, and Operations.
In This Role, You Will:
· Participate in internship program activities, including workshops, training sessions, job shadowing, and special projects.
· Assist with loan request intake, document organization, workflow tracking, and operational reporting.
· Review loan closing packages under supervision for completeness and help identify missing or inconsistent information.
· Gain exposure to commercial borrower structures, guaranties, commitment letters, collateral types, flood requirements, insurance, title work, and approval documentation.
· Observe how commercial loan documents, closing instructions, and settlement information are prepared and reviewed.
· Collaborate with Commercial Loan Closing Liaisons, Commercial Loan Closers, managers, and partners in Lending, Credit Administration, and Compliance.
· Support quality control, exception tracking, process improvement, reporting, automation, and technology initiatives.
· Prioritize tasks, maintain attention to detail, protect confidential information, meet deadlines, and thrive in a fast-paced remote environment.
· Complete and present a final project summarizing key learnings and recommendations to department leadership.
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
· Education: 3.4 GPA preferred. Current undergraduate student pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Finance, Banking, Business Administration, Accounting, Economics, Risk Management, Information Systems, Business Analytics, or a related field; Rising Senior, graduating in 2028.
· Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Teams; strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills; eagerness to learn complex processes.
· Attributes: Detail-oriented, proactive, intellectually curious, service-focused, and able to work independently and collaboratively in a remote environment.
· Preferred: Interest in commercial lending, loan operations, documentation, compliance, process improvement, automation, or artificial intelligence.
Training Requirements:
· Complete mandatory new hire compliance training and New Employee Orientation.
· Complete structured department training aligned with the Commercial Loan Closing Liaison and Commercial Loan Closer job families.
Physical Demands:
· Ability to effectively access and interpret information on computer screens, documents, and reports. The role requires extended time using a computer, which can be accommodated by sitting or standing at an appropriate desk. WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position is remote 5 days a week, 40 hours a week, with minimal travel required. A secure, distraction-free workspace and reliable internet connection are required.
In accordance with Colorado and Virginia law: Pay for this position is anticipated to be $20 per hour.
