Oral Health Education Specialist

The Oral Health Education Specialist contributes to the calling of Medical Teams International by developing and providing accurate dental information to low-income communities in Central Oregon to support rural and frontier communities in understanding and advocating for their own oral health needs and those of their families, particularly children, and to assist them in accessing dental care either through Medical Teams mobile dental programs and/or other dental health providers in their area. This role will present an established oral health care curriculum to social service agencies, pre-schools, and schools.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Provide oral health education presentations to Central Oregon-based direct service providers.

- Research, identify and partner with educational and community-based organizations and other parties with an interest in hosting a training or oral education class, and with preschools and public schools in Deschutes and Lane Counties.

- Develop outreach and advertising materials for the trainings and classes.

- Attend events offering tabling and other opportunities for educational outreach.

- Conduct in-person and virtual health training events.

- Collect, analyze and synthesize participant evaluations.

- Support REALD & SOGI participant evaluation events including providing in-person support for an October luncheon event.

- Present training and class evaluation analysis to project leadership

- Draft a final report with lessons learned and recommendations for future educational work.

Other Duties:

- Support safeguarding of program participants and employees through promoting an environment of awareness and upholding the code of conduct provisions of Medical Teams Protection from Sexual Exploitation, Abuse & Harassment, Child & Vulnerable Adult protection, and harassment-free workplace policies. Incumbents will remain alert and responsive to any child and adult safeguarding risks, acquire relevant knowledge and skills which will enable you to promote strong safeguarding practices, understand the child and adult safeguarding policy and procedures, and conduct yourself in a manner consistent with the Safeguarding code of conduct and behavior expectations.

- Utilize volunteers when appropriate.

- Additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION, LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS

- Bachelors degree (preferably in public health or education). Professional experience in a relevant field may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

EXPERIENCE

Required:

- Minimum 2 years experience preparing, coordinating, and implementing public presentations.

Preferred:

- Experience working in pre-school or elementary school settings.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Knowledge:

- Knowledge of humanitarian standards, donors, systems and principles, e.g. Sphere, CHS, Red Cross Code of Conduct

- A basic understanding of health systems

- A basic understanding of cultural sensitivity and trauma-informed care strategies

Skills:

- Moderately skilled in Microsoft Office software: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

- Moderately skilled with communication software: Teams, Zoom, Outlook, Skype, Internet, CRM (or other database programs)

- Highly skilled in public speaking

- Highly skilled in written communication

- Spanish speaker preferred

Abilities:

- Ability and willingness to commit to Medical Teams International Calling Statement and Core Values.

- Ability to work flexible schedule and weekends as needed

- Ability to work collaboratively with others.

- Ability to understand complex health concepts and explain them in non-medical terms.

- Ability to stay overnight away from home for 2-4 consecutive nights

- Ability to successfully pass a pre-employment drug test.

- Ability to successfully clear a driving record check as part of the pre-employment screening process.

Compensation:

The anticipated hiring range is $23-$28/hour . Final compensation will be based on the selected candidate's qualifications, experience, internal equity, and geographic location.
