NPS Cultural Resources Emergency Management Technician

In coopera ti on with the Na ti onal Park Service, the Great Basin Ins ti tute (GBI) is recrui ti ng a Cultural Resources Emergency Management Technician to work coopera ti vely with Na ti onal Park Service sta ff at the four NPS sites in Contra Costa County, CA including: Eugene ONeill National Historic Site (EUON) in Danville, John Muir National Historic Site (JOMU) in Martinez, Port Chicago Naval Magazine National Memorial (POCH) in Concord, and Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historical Park (RORI) in Richmond.

This project entails developing three Museum Collection Emergency Response Plans (MCEOP) and three Museum Fire chapters to be included in the parks Structural Fire Management Plans (one of each plan for JOMU, EUON/POCH, and RORI). Working under the direction of the Museum Curator, plan templates, professional survey assessment results, and information about current park practices will be provided to aid plan development. Established emergency response supply caches will be inventoried and evaluated and the research associate will provide recommendations for additional supplies based on threats assessed in the MCEOPs. The research associate will conduct staff training sessions about emergency supply cache locations, supply use, and prescribed emergency response procedures as outlined in the finalized plans.

Timeline:

- Mid-January 2027 through September 2027, 33 week appointment;

- Part time (16 hours/ week);

- Schedule: Two eight hour days a week.

Location:

This position is primarily located in the administrative headquarters for Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond, CA. Incorporated on August 3, 1905, Richmond has a rich history and played a significant role during World War II on the home front. Known for its central location in the Bay Area, just 16 miles northeast of San Francisco, which makes it a hub for transportation with two Interstate freeways, railroads, a deepwater shipping port, and a combined BART and AMTRAK station. The yearly temperature typically varies from a low of 42F to a high of 77F, rarely dipping below 35F or exceeding 87F.

Occasional same-day site visits within office hours to John Muir National Historic Site in Martinez, CA and Eugene ONeill National Historic Site in Danville, CA (both located in Contra Costa County and within 30 miles of Richmond) will be required.

Compensation and Benefits:

Qualifications

Minimum requirements:

Successful completion of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution that includes major study in a field directly related to museum studies. Additionally, experience or training which includes topics such as: museum collection management, emergency planning, emergency response and salvage, Incident Command System, risk assessment, museum-specific hazards, fire safety, and physical security procedures. Demonstrates excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work independently.

Preferred:

In addi ti on to the above, preference is given to an individual with a masters degree from an information science or public history program with an emphasis in museum collection management. Familiarity with past, current, and emerging trends in the fields of heritage protection and disaster preparedness.
