Medical Technologist

Job Title: Medical Technologist Job Description This Medical Technologist position focuses on performing qualitative and quantitative analyses within a hospital-based general laboratory, with a strong emphasis on hematology, urinalysis, coagulation, and differentials. The role requires a New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist license or valid permit and offers an excellent opportunity for both experienced professionals and newly licensed technologists to grow, gain exposure to multiple lab departments, and receive training in chemistry within a supportive, unionized environment. Responsibilities

- Perform qualitative and quantitative analysis on all specimens received in the laboratory for the assigned station, with a primary focus on hematology, urinalysis, coagulation, and spinal counts.
- Apply a thorough understanding of the principles underlying the tests performed and maintain a working knowledge of the equipment used in the assigned station.
- Conduct hematology testing, including reading differentials and slides, and accurately interpret results.
- Perform urinalysis and coagulation testing according to established laboratory protocols and standards.
- Ensure that all specimens are correctly labeled, handled, and placed in appropriate storage conditions to maintain specimen integrity.
- Follow all quality control policies and procedures to ensure accurate, reliable, and timely patient results.
- Recognize critical or lifethreatening results, verify findings, and promptly report them to the appropriate clinician or designated healthcare professional.
- Document all test results accurately and completely in the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Adhere to clinical laboratory regulatory standards, safety procedures, and institutional policies at all times.
- Collaborate with colleagues and laboratory leadership to support continuous improvement and the rebuilding and enhancement of the laboratorys capabilities.
- Participate in crosstraining opportunities, including chemistry, to expand skill set and support general lab operations.
- Contribute to a positive, supportive work environment and communicate effectively with laboratory staff and other clinical teams.

Essential Skills

- Current New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist license or valid permit issued by the New York State Department of Education for Clinical Laboratory Technology.
- Demonstrated experience or training in hematology, including reading differentials and slides.
- Hands-on experience or training in urinalysis and coagulation testing.
- Ability to understand and apply the principles of laboratory tests and operate relevant hematology and general lab equipment.
- Proficiency in documenting results in a Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Ability to recognize, verify, and appropriately escalate critical or lifethreatening laboratory results.
- Strong attention to detail and adherence to quality control policies and procedures.
- Capability to work night shifts, including Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., or Saturday and Sunday nights as applicable.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

- ASCP certification is preferred but not required when holding a full New York State Medical Laboratory Technologist license.
- Experience in a hospital clinical laboratory setting, particularly in general lab, chemistry, hematology, and coagulation, is beneficial.
- Background or coursework in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related disciplines.
- Familiarity with micro, blood bank, urology, and other core laboratory departments is an advantage.
- Willingness to train and develop skills in chemistry and broader general lab functions.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Interest in upward mobility and professional growth within a structured laboratory environment.
- Ability to thrive in a unionized setting with established policies and procedures.

Work Environment The role is based in a hospital medical laboratory in Brooklyn, NY, within a general lab that interfaces with multiple departments, including microbiology, blood bank, chemistry, hematology, coagulation, and urology. The position primarily supports the general lab and hematology area on the night shift, working Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., with flexibility for candidates available only on Saturday and Sunday nights. The laboratory operates with modern clinical laboratory technology and a Laboratory Information System (LIS) for result documentation. The environment is unionized (1199) once permanent, offering stability and a competitive benefits package. The lab is in the process of being rebuilt and strengthened, providing opportunities for growth, crosstraining in chemistry, and entry into broader general lab work. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $50.00 - $65.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
