Electronics Technician

Job Title: Technician Job Description
The Technician supports design engineers by building and testing electronic boards and prototypes, collecting and documenting test data, generating clear reports, and performing component-level troubleshooting. This role focuses on PCB/PCBA assembly and rework, construction of test setups and equipment, and maintaining accurate documentation throughout the product development and sustaining lifecycle.
Responsibilities
- Build and assemble electronic boards and prototypes to support design engineering activities.
- Construct test equipment from sketches, drawings, schematics, and bills of materials, collaborating with the machine shop as needed.
- Perform PCB and PCBA assembly and rework, including soldering through-hole and surface-mount components down to 0402 packages.
- Repair damaged prototype printed wiring boards and ensure boards are restored to functional condition.
- Follow written test and verification procedures provided by engineers with minimal supervision.
- Use lab test equipment such as digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, function generators, and power supplies to execute tests and collect data.
- Document test results clearly and maintain high-quality records of prototype PCBA changes and modifications.
- Generate reports summarizing test activities, findings, and recommendations for design engineers.
- Order parts and supplies required for prototyping, testing, and lab operations.
- Maintain lab cleanliness, organization, and readiness, including routine lab cleanup tasks.
- Work to established deadlines and provide progress updates during daily morning meetings.
- Support sustaining projects involving second sourcing testing and prototype building.
Essential Skills
- Hands-on experience with PCB/PCBA assembly and rework, including both through-hole and surface-mount technology (SMT).
- Strong soldering skills with the ability to work on fine-pitch and small components, including 0402 packages.
- Ability to troubleshoot at the component and board level using standard electronic test equipment.
- Experience prototyping and building test setups and fixtures based on engineering documentation.
- Ability to read and interpret schematics, drawings, and printed wiring board documentation.
- Competence using digital multimeters (DMMs), oscilloscopes, function generators, and power supplies.
- Ability to read and follow written test and verification procedures accurately and consistently.
- Proficiency with MS Word, MS Excel, and Outlook, including basic scheduling and documentation tasks.
- Ability to work to deadlines and provide clear progress updates with low supervision.
- Experience with soldering, wiring, and mechanical construction of enclosures.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- IPC certification in soldering or PCB assembly is a plus.
- Experience in military, medical, or manufacturing of safety-related equipment is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with Altium design tools and printed wiring board documentation, including gerber plots.
- Experience with PLC systems and/or LABVIEW for test automation or data acquisition.
- Exposure to microcontroller programming tools for basic configuration or test support.
- Experience using hi-pot testers for safety and insulation testing.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in documentation and lab maintenance.
Work Environment
This role is based onsite in an engineering lab environment. The Technician works closely with design engineers and uses a variety of electronic test equipment, soldering tools, and prototyping hardware on a daily basis. The lab setting emphasizes hands-on work at benches and test stations, with a focus on safety, organization, and accurate documentation. Work is performed during regular lab hours, with daily morning meetings to review progress and priorities, and involves collaboration with the machine shop and other technical staff on sustaining and prototype projects.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $32.00 - $40.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
