The Phlebotomist II plays a key role in a fast-paced clinical environment, performing blood draws and other specimen collections, supporting laboratory workflows, and ensuring accurate documentation and specimen handling. This role involves troubleshooting, training, and recommending process improvements while delivering clear, courteous communication to patients and clinical staff.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
- Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols.
- Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients in a clear, courteous, and professional manner.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is accurate and complete.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts or orders to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport and maintain specimen integrity by following temperature and handling requirements.
- Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling.
- Follow different procedures as outlined by specific protocols to ensure proper transport and preservation of specimens.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and compliance standards.
- Attend annual department trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of procedures and regulations.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as needed to support laboratory operations.
- Update and maintain accurate patient information and registration records in compliance with company policies.
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries from patients and clinical staff, following appropriate guidelines.
- Support workflow by troubleshooting routine issues, assisting with training, and making recommendations to improve efficiency.
- Work collaboratively as part of a team while also functioning independently when required.
Essential Skills
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
- Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
- 24 years of overall experience in a related clinical or laboratory role.
- Proficiency in venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Ability to perform accurate specimen labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and packaging.
- Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisitions to specimen tubes and verifying orders.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for documentation and data entry.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and ability to comply with safety protocols.
- Ability to clearly explain specimen collection procedures to patients in a courteous and professional manner.
- Capability to update and maintain accurate patient information and registration details.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working in an outpatient clinical setting, particularly in womens health or an OB/GYN clinic.
- Preferred experience with glucose testing and related point-of-care procedures.
- Comfort with answering telephone inquiries and communicating laboratory results in accordance with guidelines.
- Ability to work both as part of a team and independently, adapting to changing workflow needs.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Commitment to attending annual department trainings and staying current with procedures and regulations.
Work Environment
This role is based at an outpatient IOP location within a womens health OB/GYN clinic. The Phlebotomist II works primarily in a clinical and laboratory setting, handling blood and other specimens while interacting directly with patients and clinical staff. The typical schedule is daytime hours from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The environment is fast-paced and detail-oriented, requiring adherence to safety, regulatory, and compliance standards. Work is performed using standard phlebotomy and laboratory equipment, computers with Microsoft Office Suite, and clinical information systems. The role involves working as part of a collaborative team, with periods of independent work, and maintaining a professional appearance consistent with a clinical healthcare setting.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Jacksonville, NC.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $22.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
