Open-Rank Tenure-Track Faculty in Studio Art & Design

| POSITION SUMMARY

Columbia College invites applications for an open-rank tenure-track position in Studio Art & Design with expertise in graphic design and 2D media . Applications are currently being accepted for this faculty position that will begin in August 2027 . Columbia College seeks candidates who aspire to excellence in teaching, leadership, and research, and who can build collaborative relationships within the college and the profession. We are seeking an artist-educator who can help shape the future of our program by preparing students to think critically and work creatively across traditional and digital media. The successful candidate will have an MFA by the time of appointment and will primarily teach graphic design with additional teaching opportunities in Drawing and 2D Foundations.

The Studio Art Program at Columbia College focuses on cultivating the technical abilities, aesthetic judgment, conceptual rigor, and love of making that will sustain rewarding art and design practices over the long term. Majors earn a Bachelor of Arts degree within a broad liberal arts context. The program also serves many non-majors, who have the option of minoring in either Studio Art or Art History. Facilities include a darkroom, a newly refurbished computer studio aimed at providing access to industry-standard software and technology, and studios for painting, drawing, ceramics, and printmaking. In addition, the R. Wright Spears Center for the Arts is home to the Goodall Gallery, which features student work as well as regional, national, and international artists.

This position is a nine-month , full-time , tenure-track appointment. Faculty Rank is dependent upon qualifications. The standard teaching load is twelve credit hours (4/4) for the fall and spring semesters. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to design and deliver courses in a variety of formats, including online and hybrid modalities, and is expected to teach both core courses and specialized courses in areas of art. Faculty are expected to have flexibility in class scheduling to meet the needs of the students. Faculty members are expected to participate in faculty governance and academic program activities, and to engage in service as well as scholarship and professional development.

Qualifications

| RESPONSIBILITIES

- Teach courses in graphic design, digital and 2D foundations as well as classes that fulfill the general education requirement for Aesthetic Inquiry.

- Mentor and advise students pursuing careers in art and design.

- Contribute to curriculum development as we look to grow graphic design.

- Maintain an active creative practice and engage in continued scholarship.

- Participate fully in the collaborative culture of our small but ambitious program.

| QUALIFICATIONS

- MFA in Studio Art, Design, or a closely related field (completed by time of appointment).

- Teaching experience at the college level preferred.

- Demonstrated expertise in both graphic design and traditional 2D media.

- Interest in interdisciplinary approaches, community engagement, and program building.
