Environmental Engineer

POSITION OVERVIEW:

NORPAC is looking for an Environmental Engineer to join the Health and Safety Team. The scope of the position includes implementing, coordinating, maintaining, monitoring, and improving the progress of environmental programs across the mill. Primary focus will be to assist with managing day-to-day and some long-term activities for air quality, wastewater, and stormwater compliance; chemical management; and solid and hazardous/dangerous waste management.

Qualifications

Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

Provide regulatory guidance to mill operations, maintenance, and management on a day-to-day, or as needed basis. Ensuring that the mill is aligned with corporate initiatives and priorities, assuring compliance with IP expectations
Drive continuous and deliberate improvements including systems development to ensure environmental compliance and prevent problems
Ensure completion of required compliance reports for air, wastewater, stormwater, solid and hazardous/dangerous waste, and chemical management.
Serves as liaison between the organization and environmental regulatory agencies
Participates in environmental compliance audits and assists the site in closing identified gaps
Prepares, reviews, updates and submits environmental inspections and reports
Participating as a member of Environmental Department; maintaining strong relationships with other business unit personnel as well as operating and maintenance department leaders
Working with mill engineering and operations to evaluate capital projects for potential environmental permitting requirements
Promoting and atmosphere of safety excellence through leading by example and intervening when necessary to correct behaviors
Completing safety work observations to ensure internal and external resources are complying with safe work practices, HSE work plans
Supporting housekeeping programs for the area and driving improvement projects, audit systems, and excellent results (i.e. Hazardous/Universal waste storage facilities, etc.)
Other duties as assigned and identified

Required Qualifications and Key Skills:

Bachelors degree in Engineering or Environmental sciences, or related field required
Two plus years of environmental compliance/management experience in a manufacturing environment (pulp and paper industry preferred)
Experience in practical application of federal, state, and local environmental regulations. Knowledge of Washington state and Southwest Clean Air Agency regulations will also be beneficial
Demonstrated track record of success in working in a team environment with focus on results, safety, and ability to solve problems
Proven commitment to safety and safety processes
Strong computer skills including proficiency with all Microsoft Office applications, SAP business systems, and other databases. Plant application, PI ProcessBook, ParcView experience preferred
Certifications (will/may be required to get upon hiring if do not already have)
DOT, RCRA, hazmat training certification
EPA Method 9 Smoke School

Desirable:

Familiar with Air and NPDES wastewater & stormwater permitting, SPCC, Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan, and associated reporting requirements
Willing and capable to work with contractors, off-site certified laboratories, holding them accountable for safety, precision and accuracy
Must be flexible and willing to accept additional tasks, responsibilities as needed to help Environmental Department achieve goals and targets
Work effectively alone and within a team
Instill safety as a core value within the team and effectively communicate a shared vision for safety, environmental compliance to regulatory and IP work standards
Actively promote a culture of engagement and respect
Utilize excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate to groups and individuals at all levels, including external regulatory agencies

Compensation:

Salary range for this position is 95,000 – 120,000, depending on experience (DOE). This is a salaried exempt position.
