Outdoor Adventure Center Guide II - Flex

Job Description

The Outdoor Adventure Center Guide (OAC) II will provide support and guidance in outdoor recreational programming for guests visiting the estate.  Responsibilities will include leading raft trips, bike rides, archery and other outings and programs.  The guide will also assist with group programming and special events, as well as support the OAC management team with administrative duties as needed.  This position is responsible for training skills and overseeing service standards for OAC Level I guides. The guide will also provide general support and assistance to the department, leadership, and company as required.

The starting pay range for this position is based on the level of qualifications and relevant experience above the minimum requirements.

Flex: A position working an average of 20-29 hours per week (between 1000 - 1559 hours/year).

Schedule may vary, but generally 8:30am - 5pm. Holiday, weekend and evening availability is required.

Essential Job Duties:

1. Guide guests on a wide range of outdoor outings, including, but not limited to, biking, rafting, kayaking, and hiking.
2. Assist guests with information, rental equipment, and trail map orientation.
3. Maneuver kayaks and rafts using a paddle or oar frame.
4. Load equipment on and off vans and trailers, including rafts, kayaks, paddles, bikes, and more, and drive a 15-passenger van and trailer loaded with guests and equipment.
5. Clean and maintain bikes, rafts, paddles, work spaces, vehicles, and all other equipment.
6. Interpret plants, shrubs, trees, horticulture practice, wildlife, forestry, and more.
7. Assist with developing and delivering specialty programs to large groups.
8. Train guides on skills and programs.
9. Help guests with general estate information, visit planning, and cross-sell other activities offered at Biltmore.
10. Assist with booking, charging, and scheduling guests for outdoor activities.
11. Support events and programming within Antler Hill Village and Farm, as needed.
12. Assist the OAC management team with administrative duties.

Additional Responsibilities:

1. Lead the OAC crew on duty in the absence of the Crew Leader or Supervisor.
2. Provide guest services in the Outdoor Center (guest check-in, etc.)
3. Adjust staffing as necessary to meet Biltmore and department goals and guest requests.
4. Provide general support and assistance to the leadership team, department, and company.

Qualifications:

1. A High School diploma (or GED) and experience in outdoor program leadership or education.
2. At least one year of experience as an Outdoor Adventure Center Guide I or equivalent experience in a similar outdoor program setting.
3. Experience leading interpretive activities and outdoor activities.
4. Excellent guest service and communication skills, including public speaking.
5. Demonstrable breadth of knowledge regarding Biltmore products, services, and Biltmore Estate general/family history. 
6. Ability to work well with co-workers.
7. Current certification in First Aid and CPR (online certification not sufficient).
8. Must be 18 years old and have valid NC driver’s license.
9. Availability to work weekends and holidays.
10. Proficiency with current ticketing and reservation systems.
11. Demonstrable knowledge of all general equipment usage related to Biltmore outdoor activities, including hitching, driving, and backing trailers.

Physical Requirements:

1. Must be able to lift, push, pull, and carry 50 + lbs on regular basis.
2. Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time.
3. Must be able to deal with outside elements such as wind, rain, snow, and heat.
4. Must have ability to lift bikes, rafts, kayaks, and other equipment on and off the van and trailer.
5. Must be able to swim.
6. Must pass a physical exam and drug screen test.
