Manager, Engineering, Stamping & Tooling

In this role, you will lead engineering for stamped parts and projects at Tesla Grand Rapids — from concept through design, purchasing, tryout, quality loops, and home-line. You will ensure engineering rigor, quality, and on-time delivery at program scale. You will lead, mentor, and develop a team of Mechanical Design Engineers, Quality Engineers, and Quality Technicians to own die design, design quality, and part dimensional performance across multiple concurrent jobs.

Own end-to-end engineering for stamped parts and projects from concept to home-line  Lead, mentor, and develop Mechanical Design Engineers, Quality Engineers, and Quality Technicians  Drive structured quality gates using metrology and tryout feedback  Empower the team to define and execute next steps (weld/rework, recut) to meet tooling dimensional expectations  Provide oversight for efficient incorporation of product changes and evaluate timing, cost, and tool performance risks  Prioritize people and jobs across a live portfolio under competing deadlines and changing priorities  Escalate clear options and strategies to Site Director and leadership when capacity, cost, or cross-functional blockers require site-level decisions  Represent Die Engineering with stamping and program partners and other Tesla sites on launch readiness, shipment status, and production support needs

Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience  10+ years of experience in stamping die design, die tryout, or tooling program leadership in automotive manufacturing  Deep hands-on experience with die construction and tryout: process/layout, castings and plate, binders and draw development, trim/pierce steels, dimensional buyoff, and rework/recut judgment  At least 3 years in a people-management role with a proven track record of building and leading a technical team (experience leading 10+ engineers preferred)  Strong decision-making ability under pressure, with a focus on timing, cost, and quality tradeoffs  Applies first-principles thinking to challenge and improve existing die methods  Communicates status, risk, and tradeoffs clearly to engineers, leadership, and non-technical partners  Willingness to travel domestically and internationally to support supplier visits, tryouts, and site operations
