About this role
RaceTrac Company Overview
Job Description:
RaceTrac is seeking a driven, highly accountable tax professional who is energized by complex problems, comfortable operating with autonomy, and committed to delivering accurate, well-supported results. The Senior Tax Analyst independently manages key indirect tax workstreams across sales and use tax, property tax compliance and appeals, tax accounting, audit defense, technical research, process improvement, and cross-functional tax support.
This role works in a complex, multi-entity business spanning retail fuel, convenience stores, restaurants, real estate, supply and distribution, and acquisitions. Success requires the initiative to reach beyond the Tax team, engage business partners, ask thoughtful questions, and obtain the facts needed to reach sound conclusions. The Senior Tax Analyst must be comfortable communicating directly with Tax leadership, including the Vice President of Tax, and translating technical tax requirements into clear, practical, business-oriented recommendations. This position offers regular visibility to Tax leadership, including the Vice President of Tax, and the opportunity to contribute as part of a valued, high-performing Tax team that is trusted to support sound business decisions across the organization.
The ideal candidate enjoys diving into unfamiliar or technically challenging tax matters, conducting disciplined research, documenting supportable positions, and following issues through resolution. This individual embraces technology, automation, data tools, and artificial intelligence to improve how work is performed, while maintaining strong judgment, appropriate review, reliable documentation, and effective internal controls. The role offers meaningful exposure to recurring compliance, complex transactions, property tax valuation matters, audit controversy, acquisition integration, and strategic business initiatives.
What You'll Do :
- Sales and Use Tax Compliance: Support sales and use tax compliance processes performed by an outside third-party provider, including data analysis before return preparation begins, review of completed workpapers and returns for accuracy and completeness, reconciliation and issue resolution, and ongoing identification of process efficiencies and sustainable improvements.
- Property Tax Compliance and Appeals: Support property tax compliance and appeals processes generally managed by an outside third-party provider, including ensuring data provided to the provider is complete and accurate, managing property tax audits, coordinating information needed for appeals, validating tax bills and assessments, and maintaining audit-ready, defensible positions and documentation.
- Tax Accounting and Reconciliations: Review account reconciliations generally prepared by Tax Analysts, including investigating and resolving account variances, validating support, and maintaining accurate, well-documented, audit-ready tax accounts. Prepare more complex reconciliations, journal entries, analyses, or related research when needed.
- Audits and Controversy: Gather and analyze audit-support data, respond to information and data requests, and assist in building and maintaining processes and procedures that support exemption certificate management and documentation around tax positions. Organize facts and develop clear, complete, audit-ready, and defensible support files.
- Technical Research and Advisory: Serve as a key contributor on complex tax research and advisory matters, including interpreting applicable authorities, identifying key facts, documenting supportable conclusions, and developing practical options. Partner with Tax leadership and external advisors to refine positions, shape business-oriented recommendations, and support implementation of approved strategies.
- Business Partnership and Fact Gathering: Build effective relationships with Accounting, Construction, Merchandising, Supply and Distribution, Legal, Operations, and other business stakeholders to understand business processes, gather complete and accurate facts, identify tax considerations early, and support practical, well-informed tax treatment and recommendations.
- Projects and Process Improvement: Contribute to tax projects and process improvement initiatives by helping define scope, gather requirements, analyze current-state processes, identify practical improvement opportunities, and support implementation. Assist with automation, control enhancements, planning opportunities, acquisition integration, and other initiatives that improve accuracy, efficiency, scalability, and business support.
- Technology, Automation, and Data Enablement: Use tax, accounting, research, data, automation, and AI-enabled tools to organize and analyze data, reduce manual work, strengthen documentation, improve visibility, and scale recurring tax processes. Apply sound judgment, validation, data protection, and control discipline to technology-enabled work.
- Communication with Tax Leadership: Communicate facts, analyses, risks, recommendations, project status, and open items clearly and confidently to Tax leadership, including the Vice President of Tax. Escalate issues timely, frame decisions thoughtfully, and seek leadership input when judgment, risk tolerance, or business alignment is needed.
- Ownership and Execution: Manage deadlines and competing priorities, anticipate next steps, track dependencies and follow-up items, communicate risks early, and deliver manager-ready work product with clear support, practical conclusions, and minimal rework.
- Team Contribution: Share knowledge, provide thoughtful review and guidance where appropriate, support the development of Tax Analysts, and contribute to a collaborative, accountable, and high-performing Tax team.
What We're Looking For:
- Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university required; degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field preferred.
- 3–5+ years of relevant tax experience, preferably including sales and use tax compliance, tax accounting, account reconciliations, audit support, or indirect tax operations.
- Experience with property tax compliance or appeals, technical research, valuation analysis, process improvement, acquisition integration, or cross-functional tax projects preferred.
- Strong Excel and analytical skills, including the ability to organize, reconcile, validate, summarize, explain, challenge, and defend data accurately.
- Demonstrated ability to research complex tax matters, evaluate facts and authorities, document supportable conclusions, and communicate practical recommendations.
- Ability and interest to quickly learn and effectively use tax, accounting, research, data, automation, AI, and enterprise technology platforms. Relevant tools may include Vertex, Alteryx, Workday, Checkpoint, and property tax compliance or appeal-management systems.
- Strong professional curiosity, initiative, communication skills, sound judgment, and confidence to ask thoughtful questions and obtain information from business partners and leadership.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, own project deliverables, meet recurring deadlines, communicate risks clearly, and operate effectively with meaningful accountability.
