Structural (Rail Bridge) Project Engineer

Job Description

Dewberry is seeking a Structural (Rail Bridge) Project Engineer / Inspector to join Dewberry’s Bloomfield, NJ office and work as part of our growing nationwide Transit and Freight Rail Practice. The individual will focus on transit and freight rail bridge projects and will be responsible for the successful delivery of high-quality designs and inspections.

The candidate must have design experience on simple and complex bridges (primarily steel and concrete construction) and on a variety of transportation-related structures such as retaining walls and culverts using applicable software for both public and private clients. Bridge design work encompasses new and replacement bridges, and bridge rehabilitation.

Bridge inspection experience of simple and complex bridges is also required. The individual must have experience working as a Team Leader on bridge and culvert inspections, and be able to coordinate vendors and agencies to furnish equipment, traffic control and rail flagging to successfully and safely perform inspections.

The candidate must be able to successfully work independently as well as with and/or lead a team of structural engineers and drafters, as well as coordinate with other project disciplines, working closely with clients to meet their objectives. The ability and willingness to mentor less experienced staff is required.

Responsibilities

- Applies broad knowledge of structural and railroad engineering principles and practices to support design and inspections teams.

- Provides a resource of railroad operational, and maintenance practices to design teams.

- Participate in all phases of project development including planning, scheduling, inspection, analysis, design, and development of construction documents including reports, contract plans, cost estimates and specifications.

- Perform structural analysis, design and load rating calculations utilizing a variety of structural engineering software, in accordance with relevant design standards including AREMA and client requirements.

- Perform detailed checking of calculations and design drawings produced by others.

- Perform bridge inspections utilizing electronic data collection equipment, and deliver bridge inspection reports utilizing client templates and forms, to document the structure’s existing condition.

- Plan and prepare for bridge inspections by coordinating with agencies, vendors and other appropriate parties to furnish equipment, schedule track outages and flagging.

- Supervise and mentor inspection team members, and less experienced engineers.

- Work on projects of different sizes and magnitudes; from design and inspection of small culverts to multi-span through-girder design or inspection of large steel trusses.

- Assist in monitoring project budgets and schedules, and support proposal development by developing schedules and scopes of work.

Required Skills & Required Experience

- BS degree in Civil Engineering (MS or MEng in Structural Engineering preferred).

- PE License is required (NJ or NY preferred or ability to obtain it)

- A minimum of 8 years of experience, with a strong technical background in railroad engineering including inspection and design for freight rail or passenger transit bridges, and basic understanding of track design, signals, traction power and maintenance practices.

- Familiarity with AREMA Manual for Railway Engineering.

- Prior experience with local transportation agencies such as NJ Transit, MTA, LIRR, Metro North, MBTA, Amtrak and/or freight railroads (Norfolk Southern, CSX, Conrail, and others) is highly desirable.

- Proficiency in MS Office software and CADD (MicroStation preferred).

- Experience working in a team environment and ability to mentor less experienced staff.

- Experience coordinating engineering work and interfacing with other disciplines, consultants, vendors, and/or clients.

- Willingness to work in the field frequently throughout the year.

- Physical ability to work in adverse weather conditions, work around bridges, roads, rails, and tunnels. Ability to carry ladders and gear, work at heights, over water and work in water with waders.

- Willingness to travel within New Jersey, New York City and adjacent areas, and occasionally outside this region.

- Strong leadership skills and desire to deliver the highest quality projects to our clients.

- Excellent oral and written communication skills

- A willingness to support business development activities

- Driving is a requirement of the position. A clean driving record is required.

Salary Range

The projected range for this position is $118,000 to $152,000 annually. Depending upon other factors, i.e., skills, experience, location, market conditions, the range may vary slightly. These ranges are for Bloomfield, NJ only.
