Survey Crew Chief

Job Description

Dewberry is currently seeking a Survey Crew Chief to lead field survey operations based out of Dewberry's Raleigh, NC office. This individual will work outdoors daily performing boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, right-of-way, powerline, gas line, hydrographic, and construction surveys for public and private clients. The successful candidate must be willing and able to travel and possess strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills. The Survey Crew Chief is responsible for the accurate and efficient collection of survey data while ensuring compliance with project requirements, safety standards, and company procedures.

Responsibilities

- Manage and lead field survey operations in compliance with project requirements, schedules, and company standards.

- Perform boundary, topographic, tree, ALTA/NSPS, hydrographic surveys, and construction staking.

- Perform design surveys in accordance with NCDOT standards, guidelines, and safety procedures.

- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot survey equipment including robotic total stations, GPS/GNSS receivers, digital levels, and data collectors.

- Collect, verify, and document accurate field measurements, observations, and field notes.

- Organize and transfer electronic field data to ensure seamless integration with office workflows.

- Supervise, mentor, and train survey crew members while coordinating daily activities, logistics, and safety practices.

- Coordinate with project managers regarding project progress, field conditions, and potential challenges.

- Perform field calculations and assist with survey computations and plan interpretation.

- Ensure compliance with company safety policies and applicable regulatory requirements.

- Perform other duties as assigned

Required Skills & Required Experience

- Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Survey Party Chief or Survey Crew Chief.

- High School Diploma required; additional surveying-related education is plus.

- Proficient in the operation of robotic total stations, GPS/GNSS equipment (Static, RTK, and RTN), data collectors and digital levels.

- Knowledge of topographic survey field data acquisition and survey data collection procedures.

- Ability to work independently in remote locations and under challenging field conditions.

- Familiarity with construction plans, right-of-way maps, and engineering drawings.

- Demonstrated ability to lead survey crews, prioritize daily tasks, and maintain productivity while meeting project schedules.

- Ability to identify field issues, exercise sound judgment, and implement practical solutions with minimal supervision.

- Physically able to work outdoors in all weather conditions and varied terrain.

- Ability to repetitively stoop, crawl, bend, squat, lift up to 50 pounds, and stand for extended periods on varied surfaces.

- Ability to perform arithmetic computations accurately and maintain clear, legible records.

- Ability to communicate effectively with clients, coworkers, and the public.

- Knowledge of surveying instruments and equipment, including their use and maintenance.

- Knowledge of surveying principles, practices, and applicable state laws governing plats, property lines, and survey monuments.

- Must pass DOT drug and alcohol testing and be able to pass a background check, if required.

- Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to pass a driving record review.

- Must be willing and able to travel for out-of-town assignments.

- Must be reliable, dependable, and able to work 40+ hours per week as required.
