St. Joseph Parish is a vibrant Jesuit parish in Seattle, that strives to form parishioners in Ignatian Spirituality, especially building a community of faith that seeks justice. We are looking for a detailed-oriented, energetic, collaborative, and creative person to serve as Choral Piano Accompanist for our 9:00AM and 11:00AM Mass choirs. This is a part-time position of 8 scheduled hours per week.
I. ESSENTIAL POSITION DUTIES:
A. Collaborates with the Pastoral Leader, Director of Pastoral Ministries, and Director of Music in implementing the mission of the parish.
B. Regular Masses and Rehearsals : Primarily accompanies 9:00AM and 11:00AM Masses at St. Joseph Church and associated rehearsals.
C. Special Masses : Accompanies Holy Days of Obligation and other special liturgies and associated rehearsals (additional hours as needed).
D. Parish Family Masses : Accompanies liturgies for parish family Masses and liturgies in collaboration with St. Therese Parish, including Easter Vigil; accompanies associated rehearsals (additional hours as needed).
E. Preparation : Prepares music in advance of rehearsals and liturgies, including gathering music from the Gather Hymnal and other hymnals, giamusic.org, and ocp.org, in collaboration with the Director of Music.
F. Organ : Plays organ occasionally for special Masses such as Easter, if have organ skills.
G. Assists as a back-up to the choir director (currently the parish family Director of Music) to direct the choir when needed; accompanies the choirs and assists the substitute director (additional hours as needed).
H. Provides piano accompaniment at parish weddings and funerals if available.
I. Maintains a level of knowledge and skills required for the ministry. This is accomplished by reading appropriate materials and attending workshops.
J. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
- Degree in music or piano performance higher preferred.
- Knowledge of Catholic liturgy preferred.
- Experience providing piano accompaniment for churches required, Catholic churches preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to sight read proficiently and accompany contemporary, traditional, multicultural, and classical music competently.
- Ability to play some brief improvisations preferred.
- Advance preparation and practice of all music is expected.
- Ability to collaborate well with others; as well as support the choir and choir director.
Any offered salary is determined based on internal equity, internal salary ranges, market data, applicants skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications.
