Position Summary
At the YMCA, a clean and welcoming facility is an important part of creating a great experience for our members and community. As a Custodian, you will help ensure our YMCA facilities are clean, safe, and ready for everyone who walks through our doors. This is a hands-on position ideal for someone who takes pride in their work, pays attention to the details, and enjoys staying active throughout their shift. You will work independently and as part of a team to clean and maintain assigned areas throughout the facility.

Successful Custodians:
- Keep assigned areas clean, sanitized, organized, and welcoming.
- Take pride in creating a positive environment for members, guests, and staff.
- Complete daily cleaning responsibilities thoroughly and efficiently.
- Notice maintenance, safety, or cleanliness concerns and report them promptly.
- Work independently while knowing when to ask for guidance or assistance.
- Follow proper procedures when using cleaning products and equipment.
- Contribute to a dependable and supportive team environment.
What You'll Be Doing
Cleaning & Facility Care
- Clean and sanitize restrooms, common areas, floors, and other assigned spaces.
- Mop, vacuum, dust, wash windows, remove trash, and complete general cleaning throughout the facility.
- Clean around and at the bases of exercise equipment.
- Complete housekeeping laundry as needed.
- Refill disinfectant bottles and restock custodial closets and supplies.
- Assist with seasonal responsibilities, including snow removal and other general facility needs.
- Follow daily cleaning schedules and checklists to ensure assigned tasks are completed.
Equipment & Maintenance
- Safely use motorized and non-motorized cleaning equipment.
- Properly use and handle cleaning products, chemicals, and supplies.
- Help maintain assigned custodial equipment and work areas.
- Identify and report needed repairs, maintenance concerns, hazardous conditions, or damaged equipment.
- Complete minor repairs as directed.
Safety & Security
- Help ensure the YMCA building and property remain safe and secure during your shift.
- Report incidents, hazards, and safety concerns to your supervisor.
- Follow YMCA safety procedures and cleaning protocols.
- Maintain awareness of your surroundings while working throughout the facility.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

This is an active, hands-on position that requires you to move throughout the facility and complete a variety of cleaning responsibilities during your shift. Custodians play an important role in the member experience—even when much of their work happens behind the scenes.

Challenges of the Role
- Being on your feet and moving throughout much of your shift.
- Lifting, bending, stooping, and completing physically active tasks.
- Cleaning high-traffic areas while the YMCA is open and active.
- Working with cleaning products and chemicals.
- Responding to unexpected spills, messes, or facility needs.
- Working a flexible schedule that may include afternoons, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 16 years old.
- Six months or more of related custodial or cleaning experience preferred.
- Ability to work independently and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to read and understand cleaning instructions, procedures, manuals, and safety information.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to interact respectfully and effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.
- Ability to travel to other Crossroads YMCA branches within Lake County as needed.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the facility for extended periods.
- Ability to occasionally stoop, bend, and use a ladder.
- Sufficient strength, agility, and mobility to safely perform custodial responsibilities.
- Ability to safely work with cleaning products, solvents, and chemicals.
- Visual, auditory, and verbal ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to maintain alertness, concentration, and initiative throughout the shift.
- Must maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.
