Job Summary
Under the supervision of a Director of Mental Health Services (MHS), the MHS Clinical Supervisor provides clinical and administrative supervision to Therapists in the Mental Health Services department. They give Therapists information and feedback to enhance the Therapists’ ability to provide appropriate and client-specific therapeutic services and interventions. The MHS Clinical Supervisor reviews Therapists’ documentation to ensure accuracy and adherence to agency and Department of Mental Health standards.
Essential Functions
· Meet regularly with MHS Therapists for individual clinical and administrative supervision in order to review caseloads. Give clinical information and feedback to increase MHS Therapists’ ability to provide appropriate therapeutic services and interventions based on the needs of the clients and families.
· Provide weekly clinical group supervision for up to 8 therapists.
· Respond to Therapists as soon as possible when clients are in crisis situations; available during business hours and until therapists are no longer providing services.
· Provide coverage and support across Aviva programs, including Wallis House, the LYU Drop-In Center, Juvenile Justice Program and other agency programs or departments as needed. This may include weekend coverage and on-site support for Therapists providing services at these locations.
· Participate in the after-hours on-call rotation on a rotating weekly basis, serving as the on-call clinical supervisor from 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM on weekdays and 24 hours a day on weekends and holidays, year-round including all holidays. During assigned on-call weeks, responsibilities include keeping the on-call phone nearby and on, responding to missed calls within 15 minutes, assessing client safety and crisis situations, and documenting all calls in the MHS Call Log in SharePoint. On-call rotation weeks run Monday through Sunday, with phone transitions occurring at 8:00 PM each Monday.
· Serve as Supervisor on Duty on a rotating weekly basis, providing real-time clinical and administrative oversight and serving as the primary point of contact for Therapists and program staff during the designated week.
· Following any after-hours crisis intervention, send a summary email to all members of the client’s treatment team, associated supervisors, directors, and the AVP of MHS detailing the incident, interventions, and outcome no later than the morning of the next business day. Ensure all current safety plans are uploaded in Exym prior to transferring the on-call phone at the end of the assigned rotation week.
· Actively attend, participate, and collaborate in team meetings/case conferences to support and provide guidance to MHS Therapists.
· Ensure that MHS Therapists meet minimum weekly service delivery expectations, submit progress notes within 24 hours of services rendered and ensure that all other documentation is submitted within the agency timeframes/deadlines.
· Review all Therapist documentation to ensure that it is submitted accurately and according to Aviva, Department of Mental Health, and COA standards.
· Is LPS Designated to initiate legal holds for client’s inpatient psychiatric services/care.
· Attend all meetings as it relates to client care and/or therapeutic development as required by Aviva.
· Is sensitive and responsive to the cultural differences among the agency’s client population.
· Actively participate in quality improvement projects.
The MHS Clinical Supervisor will take on special projects or additional duties as assigned by the Director of Mental Health Services and/or AVP of Mental Health Services.
Qualifications
Competency Requirements
- Must have a California BBS License for at least 2 years
- Must have experience clinically supervising others (i.e. graduate students, clinicians, case managers, paraprofessionals) for a minimum of 1 year
- Have experience providing direct clinical services
- Ability to speak, read, write and understand English
- Ability to work effectively as a member of treatment teams
- Ability to accurately guide and support Therapist skills in assessing and diagnosing
- Ability to promptly and thoroughly analyze and respond to a crisis situation and support therapists and in appropriate client decision making
- Ability to accurately and completely review, provide feedback and approve required paperwork in accordance with agency and County regulations
- Have knowledge and supervise the principles and practices of community mental health treatment, including interviewing, assessment, individual, family and group counseling
- Have knowledge to guide access to general psychiatric emergency intervention protocols
- Must demonstrate knowledge of principles of adult, adolescent and child psychology
- Must demonstrate sound judgment, critical thinking and decision-making skills
- Have knowledge of the laws and regulations related to client’s rights, best practices, voluntary or involuntary inpatient treatment
- Have knowledge and experience accessing community resources
- Must have excellent organizational, oral and written communication skills
- Must have excellent time management skills
- Ability and willingness to provide cross-program support at various Aviva sites, including field-based and residential settings
- Ability to respond effectively and in a timely manner during after-hours on-call shifts, including evenings, overnight, weekends, and holidays
- Knowledge of crisis intervention protocols, including criteria and procedures for initiating 5585/5150 holds and coordination with ACCESS/PMRT, 988, LAPD SMART Team, and other emergency resources
- Bilingual (Spanish) preferred

Education and Experience
- Master’s degree in Social Work or Psychology from a regionally accredited university required
- Meets Board of Behavioral Science criteria for providing clinical supervision to associates (ASW/AMFT/APPC) or 2 years post licensure.
- Experience providing clinical supervision required
- Experience with DMH documentation required
- Knowledge of DMH Evidenced Based Practices strongly preferred
- Experience with field based or outpatient mental health services strongly preferred
Certifications/Licenses
- Clinical license from the California Board of Behavioral Science - LCSW, LMFT, LPCC (see BBS supervisory guidelines)
- Valid California driver license

- Satisfactory completion of health screening
- Proof of legal eligibility to work in the United States
- Satisfactory driving record
- Must be available to participate in the after-hours on-call rotation (8:00 PM – 8:00 AM weekdays; 24 hours on weekends and holidays) on a rotating weekly basis
- Must be available to participate in the weekly Supervisor on Duty rotation
- New Clinical Supervisors will be added to the on-call rotation after 2 months of employment

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of a MHS Clinical Supervisor, the employee is frequently required to sit, walk, and use their fingers to manipulate a keyboard or writing instrument. The employee is occasionally required to drive and stand. The employee is rarely required to run, bend, kneel, reach or lift objects weighing more than 10 pounds.
Work Environment
The work environment is primarily indoors. The noise level varies from quiet to moderate.
