Job Description

AECOM is seeking a Track Engineer to join our transportation team in Chicago, Illinois. This is a hybrid position that provides the opportunity to work both in the Chicago office and remotely in accordance with AECOM’s hybrid work practices. The role will support transit and rail infrastructure projects for clients throughout Chicago and the surrounding region, including agencies and operators such as the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), Metra and Amtrak.

The Track Engineer will contribute to the planning and design of heavy rail transit, light rail transit, commuter rail, freight rail and streetcar systems. The role will support projects of varying size and complexity, with responsibilities spanning track alignment, corridor design, plan development, technical specifications and interdisciplinary coordination.

Working in a multidisciplinary environment, the successful candidate will collaborate closely with track, civil, roadway, structural, architectural and rail systems teams to develop coordinated design solutions and support project delivery.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

- Perform track and civil design for rail and transit projects of varying scale and complexity.
- Develop track alignments, corridor models, plans, profiles, cross sections and related design documentation.
- Support track and civil discipline leads on major infrastructure projects.
- Prepare and contribute to technical specifications, calculations, reports and design documentation.
- Coordinate track design requirements with civil, roadway, structural, architectural and rail systems disciplines.
- Support the design of track corridor components, including special trackwork and various track forms.
- Assist project managers, deputy project managers and discipline leads with technical coordination, scope, schedule and project delivery activities.
- Participate in design reviews and quality control processes to support compliance with applicable client standards and project requirements.
- Coordinate track design interfaces with rail systems such as traction power, overhead contact systems and signaling.
- Support project teams during design development and, as applicable, construction, inspection and field coordination activities.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

- BA/BS + 4 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Master’s Degree in Engineering or related field
- 5 years in design
- Strong skills in track alignment design and CADD skills in both the MicroStation and AutoCAD platforms
- PE license in Illinois or the ability to obtain it within 2 years
- Experience in MicroStation ORD and/or Bentley InRoads / OpenRoads / OpenRail
- Advanced proficiency in MicroStation ORD and/or Bentley InRoads / OpenRoads / OpenRail
- Experience in working on CTA, Metra, Amtrak, BNSF and UPRR projects
- Working knowledge of design requirements for rail systems (e.g. traction power, catenary, signals).
- Working knowledge of track structure design principles and special trackwork details
- Experience with design and testing of ballast-less track forms
- Experience in construction, maintenance or inspection of track
