Job Description

AECOM’s Ontario Environment team is hiring  an Environmental Field Inspector -  Monitor to support our growing portfolio of construction environmental compliance and monitoring work across Northern Ontario. Preference will be given to candidates based in Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, Blind River, or other communities along the North Shore of Lake Huron; however, we are open to qualified candidates located elsewhere in Northern Ontario. The position will involve field assignments at project sites throughout the region. This is a new position.

The successful candidate will have 1-3 years of relevant environmental experience and an interest in construction environmental monitoring. The role will involve regular field work at active construction sites, documenting environmental conditions and construction activities, checking implementation of mitigation measures and environmental requirements, and communicating observations to senior environmental staff and project teams.

The applicant will be motivated and accountable, comfortable working outdoors and around active construction, and able to work collaboratively with contractors, clients, Indigenous monitors, environmental specialists and other project team members. Field assignments may involve remote locations, rugged terrain, variable weather, early starts, weekends and extended travel depending on project schedules.

Key roles for the position include:

•  Conduct environmental inspections and monitoring at active construction sites under the direction of senior environmental staff.

•  Observe construction activities and verify implementation of environmental mitigation measures, project commitments and applicable environmental requirements.

•  Inspect erosion and sediment control measures, watercourse crossings, access roads, work areas and environmentally sensitive locations.

•  Document observations using photographs, GPS-enabled devices, electronic field forms and daily inspection reports.

•  Identify potential environmental concerns and promptly communicate observations to senior environmental staff.

•  Assist with tracking environmental deficiencies, corrective actions and follow-up inspections.

•  Support monitoring associated with wildlife, protected species, vegetation, wetlands, aquatic habitat and other environmental features, as required.

•  Support environmental incident documentation, data management and weekly/monthly reporting.

•  Follow AECOM health and safety requirements and project-specific safety procedures.

Qualifications

Must Have Skills/Experience (Including any required Certifications):

•  Post-secondary degree or diploma in environmental science, environmental technology, biology, ecology, natural resources or a related discipline from a recognized University or College.

•  Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in variable weather and terrain and around active construction sites and heavy equipment.

•  Ability to accurately document field observations and prepare clear written records.

•  Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a field team.

•  Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and comfort using tablets, GPS-enabled devices or electronic field data collection tools.

•  Valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence.

•  Ability and willingness to travel throughout Northern Ontario and work variable schedules based on construction activities.

Preferred Skills/Experience:

•  1-3 years of environmental field, construction monitoring or ecological field experience.

•  Previous experience on transmission, energy, transportation, mining or other linear infrastructure projects.

•  Familiarity with erosion and sediment control measures and common construction-related environmental risks.

•  Familiarity with Ontario and federal environmental requirements applicable to construction projects.

•  Experience with Survey123, Field Maps, GIS, GPS or similar electronic field data collection systems.

•  Experience identifying common Ontario wildlife, vegetation or aquatic features.

•  Valid Standard First Aid + CPR and/or construction safety training such as Working at Heights.

•  Experience working in remote locations or Northern Ontario.
