Veterinary Nursing Manager

Position Summary
This is a 70% administrative/leadership and 30% clinical role. The Nursing Manager will oversee nursing supervisors, support the development of the nursing team, manage day-to-day operations, and work closely with the Hospital Director and Medical Director to improve clinical standards, workflows, and team culture.
Key Responsibilities
Team & Leadership
- Oversee the nursing and clinical support team, including direct management of nursing supervisors.
- Set clear expectations for patient care, teamwork, communication, and performance.
- Coach and develop supervisors and identify future leaders.
- Build a positive, accountable, and collaborative team culture.
- Address employee concerns, performance issues, attendance, and conflict in a timely manner.
People Management
- Participate in interviewing and hiring.
- Oversee onboarding and orientation.
- Develop and maintain training and education programs.
- Conduct performance reviews and ongoing performance conversations.
- Partner with HR on employee relations and performance management.
- Recognize strong performance and support employee growth.
Clinical Excellence
- Partner with the Hospital Director and Medical Director to develop and implement clinical protocols, SOPs, and workflows.
- Promote consistent standards of patient care and nursing practice.
- Identify opportunities to improve patient safety, efficiency, communication, and medical excellence.
- Support quality improvement initiatives and ensure protocols are followed.
Operations
- Oversee nursing scheduling, staffing, payroll, and timekeeping.
- Monitor staffing needs, overtime, and coverage.
- Identify operational problems and develop practical solutions.
- Maintain a working understanding of ezyVet and SmartFlow and help the team effectively utilize both systems.
- Remain clinically involved on the floor approximately 30% of the time to stay connected to patients, staff, and hospital workflow.
Requirements
- 2–4 years of veterinary leadership experience, preferably in emergency, critical care, or a multispecialty hospital.
- Strong veterinary nursing/technician background.
- Experience managing or supervising clinical teams.
- Experience with hiring, onboarding, training, performance management, and employee development.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Comfortable working independently and making decisions.
- Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to address issues directly.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.
- Experience with ezyVet and SmartFlow preferred.
