Job Title: Phlebotomist Job Description
The Phlebotomist performs blood draws and specimen collections for patients of all ages in a fast-paced laboratory setting. This role is responsible for accurately collecting, labeling, processing, and storing specimens according to established procedures and regulatory standards, while providing clear and courteous explanations of the collection process to patients.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture blood draws and other specimen collections, including urine and fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures.
- Explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process clearly and courteously to patients of all ages, from pediatric to geriatric.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accurate test ordering and processing.
- Accurately label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy prior to specimen processing.
- Collect and store specimens according to established protocols, including placing samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes.
- Maintain specimen integrity by following specific transport procedures and protocols, including correct temperature storage requirements.
- Package specimens safely and securely for transport in compliance with laboratory standards and regulatory guidelines.
- Update patient information and maintain accurate records and documentation in laboratory systems.
- Perform specimen processing tasks, including centrifugation and preparation for analysis.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and quality standards.
- Answer telephone calls professionally and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries as permitted by laboratory policies.
- Use Microsoft Office Suite to support documentation, reporting, and communication needs in the laboratory.
Essential Skills
- Phlebotomy experience with 02+ years performing venipunctures.
- Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Phlebotomy certification and eligibility or possession of a WA State Phlebotomy License, as required.
- Ability to draw blood and collect specimens from patients across the lifespan, from pediatric to geriatric.
- Strong skills in blood draw, specimen collection, and specimen processing.
- Ability to accurately label, handle, and process specimens according to test requirements.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Understanding of OSHA and DEP regulations and ability to follow safety protocols consistently.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working with hard stick patients is preferred, with the ability to adapt techniques to challenging venous access.
- Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate matching of requisition forms, labels, and specimens.
- Effective communication skills to explain procedures clearly and courteously to patients and respond to inquiries by phone.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced laboratory environment with high specimen volumes.
- Comfort working with a wide range of patient populations and clinical situations.
- Reliability and strong organizational skills for maintaining accurate records and specimen tracking.
Work Environment
This role operates in a fast-paced laboratory setting where the phlebotomist will perform a high volume of blood draws and specimen collections. The position involves drawing blood from patients of all ages, from pediatric to geriatric, with an average of approximately 25 draws per patient. Work is performed in a clinical lab environment that requires strict adherence to safety, infection control, and regulatory standards, including OSHA and DEP guidelines. The phlebotomist will use standard phlebotomy equipment such as straight needles, butterfly needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and specimen transport containers, as well as computer systems and Microsoft Office Suite for documentation and communication. The environment is structured, detail-oriented, and team-focused, with an emphasis on maintaining specimen integrity, accuracy, and patient comfort.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Yakima, WA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $19.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
