Role Purpose
The Construction Safety Engineer will lead Health & Safety management during the construction and installation of AESC’s battery gigafactory in Navalmoral de la Mata. The role sits within the Global Infrastructure & Construction (GIC) team, reports to the Construction Manager and acts as the Owner’s H&S representative on site. The Engineer will make sure that contractors, suppliers and the Project Management Company (PMC) apply H&S requirements in line with Spanish legislation, project standards and AESC’s requirements. The work is on site, focused on execution, coordination and control . It involves close collaboration with the legally appointed Health & Safety Coordinator (CSS), the PMC and Corporate EHS.
Key Responsibilities
Project set-up
- Translate AESC Corporate EHS policies and standards into project-specific H&S requirements for construction and installation activities.
- Define H&S requirements for contractors and suppliers, together with GIC and Corporate EHS.
- Align H&S planning with the PMC and the legally appointed Health & Safety Coordinator.
- Act as the Owner’s H&S representative with the competent authorities when required.
Construction & installation
- Lead on-site H&S supervision and coordination on behalf of GIC.
- Review contractors’ H&S documentation (Construction H&S Plans, RAMS, JSAs) and monitor how it is applied in the field.
- Monitor contractor compliance with applicable law, contractual requirements and the approved H&S documentation, including the coordination of business activities (CAE) and subcontracting control.
- Coordinate daily with the Construction and Site Management teams so that H&S is built into execution planning.
- Focus on the high-risk activities typical of a battery plant build: heavy lifting, electrical works and energisation, hot works, work at height, confined spaces, and interfaces between contractors and equipment suppliers.
- Carry out site inspections, audits and safety walks, and escalate deviations through GIC project channels.
- Coordinate corrective actions with contractors, the PMC and the CSS, and follow them through to closure.
- Support incident investigations and make sure corrective and preventive actions are implemented.
- Report H&S performance, KPIs and critical risks to Project Management and Corporate EHS.
- Escalate critical risks and recommend stopping work through project governance channels when there is serious or imminent danger.
Close-out & handover
- Make sure that the construction H&S documentation and deliverables required for handover are complete and compliant.
- Work with Corporate EHS to align with commissioning and operational H&S requirements.
- Support final inspections, audits and regulatory reviews related to construction safety.

Qualifications
Desired Requirements
- Degree in Engineering, Architecture, Building Engineering or a related technical field.
- Técnico Superior en Prevención de Riesgos Laborales covering the three specialities (Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Ergonomics & Applied Psychosociology). Mandatory.
- At least 5 years of H&S experience in large industrial construction projects, or at least 2 large industrial construction projects, with direct exposure to site execution, contractor management and multi-interface environments.
- Proven experience coordinating H&S on construction sites. The Coordinador de Seguridad y Salud qualification is highly valued.
- Proven experience supervising EPC/PMC contractors on multi-contractor sites with complex interfaces.
- Hands-on experience supervising high-risk activities: lifting operations, electrical works, hot works, work at height and confined spaces.
- Solid knowledge of Spanish H&S legislation, especially construction regulations (RD 1627/1997, RD 171/2004, Ley 32/2006).
- Experience on the Owner/Client side, either directly or through a prevention service hired by the Owner, is a plus.
- Experience leading H&S on at least one large project is a plus.
- Experience on industrial, chemical or energy projects is valued, especially gigafactories or lithium battery plants, as is having followed a project through to commissioning and handover.
- Experience working with international (e.g., Chinese) contractors and installers is a plus.
- NEBOSH or an equivalent international H&S certification is a plus.
- Language Skills: Spanish – native or proficiency (mandatory); English – a plus.
- Based in Navalmoral de la Mata or within approximately 45 minutes by car, or willing to relocate. 100% on site.
- Strong leadership and authority on H&S matters, including the ability to stop work when needed, with excellent coordination and stakeholder-management skills, attention to detail, a proactive prevention mindset and the ability to perform under demanding project schedules.
