About this role
About the Role
Avegen runs a dedicated engineering team for a global health research foundation. The team works across a portfolio of digital research products such as speech biomarker apps, a multimodal assessment platform used in clinics, cognitive assessment apps, and study management portals. Our partners (clients) are in the US, Europe, the UK. This is not a one-product role. You will move between several codebases, some built by us and some inherited from other vendors. You will get productive fast in systems you didn't write. We work AI-first. Everybody gets access to frontier models. Your default is to think through problems with an AI coding assistant (e.g., Claude Code) while exploring a familiar or unfamiliar codebase, designing a change, writing tests or investigating an incident.
###
What you will do
- Build and ship features across mobile (Android/iOS), web and backend services for several research platforms
- Take over existing codebases: read the code, pipelines and tickets, fill in the missing documentation, and become the go-to person for them
- Use AI assistants as your normal way of working: to explore code, plan designs, review your own changes, create test cases and do root-cause analysis
- Own quality from start to finish: write automated tests, check releases yourself, and move at AI-native speed without a separate QA stage
- Switch between projects in the same week without losing depth, build on existing documentation and ask your agent to record what you learn (wiki pages, short videos, runbooks) so the next person and their agent builds on that.
- Build systems where privacy and observability are designed together: PII/PHI boundaries, encryption, audit logging, and on-device diagnostics you can use without seeing personal data
- Deploy and run services on AWS, Azure and partner on-prem environments. Troubleshoot production issues and lead RCAs
- Talk directly with clinical and research stakeholders and partner engineers: explain trade-offs clearly, push back on scope creep, and flag blockers early
###
Required Skills
- 4+ years of professional software engineering with a track record of shipping to production
- Comfortable with full stack development from frontend to backend
- Strong fundamentals: system design, API design, debugging, testing
- Hands-on experience in one or more of: React Native / native Android (Kotlin) / iOS (Swift), Ruby on Rails, .NET, Java Spring Boot, Python, React JS
- Daily use of AI coding assistants in real work (not just autocomplete). You can show how AI changed the way you understand, build and test software
- Experience with integration with third party using APIs, cloud-based deployments (AWS and/or Azure), CI/CD pipelines and containerisation
- Good written and spoken English. You will work directly with international clients and partner teams
- Comfortable moving between several projects while keeping enough depth to own each one
###
Preferred
- Has taken over or migrated third-party systems
- Has written automated tests at several levels (unit, integration, end-to-end/UI)
- Has used LLM APIs in products and knows model cost and routing trade-offs
###
Nice to Have
- Experience with GDPR, HIPAA, ISO 27001, ISO 13485
- Experience with healthcare, clinical research or regulated software
