The Role

The Project Field Supervisor / Start-Up & Preventive Maintenance Technician is responsible for supervising assigned HVAC field activities while performing equipment start-up, functional testing, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and system performance verification.

This role serves as a key field leader, coordinating crews and subcontractors, ensuring quality installations, supporting Testing, Adjusting, and Balancing (TAB) activities, and verifying that HVAC systems are operating safely and efficiently. The ideal candidate combines strong technical HVAC expertise with leadership abilities and a commitment to safety, quality, and customer satisfaction.

What You'll Be Doing

HVAC System Start-Up & Commissioning

- Perform HVAC equipment start-up and functional performance testing

- Verify proper system operation through electrical checks, airflow verification, refrigerant measurements, temperature splits, and static pressure testing

- Conduct duct tightness testing and document leakage results

- Coordinate repairs, corrective actions, and retesting when necessary

- Troubleshoot startup deficiencies and performance issues

- Verify installations meet manufacturer recommendations and project requirements

Preventive Maintenance & Service

- Perform preventive maintenance services on HVAC systems and equipment

- Inspect filters, coils, drains, belts, electrical components, motors, and associated system components

- Identify maintenance concerns and recommend corrective actions

- Document equipment condition, service activities, and repair recommendations

- Support ongoing system reliability and performance improvement initiatives

Field Supervision & Crew Coordination

- Direct assigned HVAC installers and subcontractors

- Coordinate daily work activities with other trades and project personnel

- Monitor field productivity, manpower utilization, and project progress

- Communicate schedule impacts, field constraints, and scope changes to project leadership

- Support project inspections, commissioning efforts, punch lists, and project turnover activities

Project Documentation & Quality Control

- Review project drawings, submittals, specifications, wiring diagrams, and manufacturer documentation

- Inspect installations for readiness prior to startup and testing

- Document deficiencies and coordinate corrective measures

- Maintain accurate startup reports, test results, maintenance records, and service documentation

- Support quality assurance and project closeout efforts

Testing, Adjusting & Balancing (TAB) Support

- Prepare systems for TAB testing

- Assist with airflow adjustments and balancing activities

- Document testing results and system performance data

- Coordinate with third-party TAB contractors when required

- Support commissioning and system optimization activities

Safety & Compliance

- Maintain safe work practices on all job sites

- Ensure compliance with company, client, and site-specific safety requirements

- Protect occupied work environments during construction and service activities

- Report safety concerns, quality issues, and project risks immediately

- Utilize appropriate PPE and safety equipment at all times

What You Bring

Required

- High school diploma or equivalent

- Minimum of 3 years of hands-on HVAC installation, startup, or service experience

- EPA Section 608 Certification appropriate for equipment serviced

- Experience performing HVAC equipment startup and troubleshooting

- Experience maintaining service records, startup documentation, and testing reports

- Ability to read mechanical plans, wiring diagrams, specifications, and equipment submittals

- Knowledge of HVAC installation, preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and system performance testing

- Strong communication and leadership skills

- Valid driver's license

- Authorization to work in the United States

Preferred

- Experience supervising HVAC crews

- Experience supporting multifamily, commercial, or occupied renovation projects

- Experience with heat pumps, split systems, duct systems, and packaged equipment

- OSHA 30 Certification

- Experience supporting Testing, Adjusting, and Balancing (TAB) activities

- Experience with commissioning and system performance verification

Work Environment

This position operates primarily in field environments at active construction sites and occupied facilities.

Field Conditions

- Indoor and outdoor work environments

- Exposure to varying weather conditions

- Work in equipment rooms, rooftops, crawlspaces, attics, and mechanical areas

- Exposure to noise, dust, electrical equipment, and moving machinery

- Frequent interaction with contractors, customers, and project teams

Physical Requirements

- Frequent standing, walking, climbing, bending, and kneeling

- Ability to work on ladders and elevated surfaces

- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds

- Ability to perform physically demanding work throughout the day

- Manual use of tools, gauges, instruments, and testing equipment

Schedule

- Full-time field position

- Hours based on project schedules and customer requirements

- Early mornings, overtime, weekend work, and travel may be required

- Flexibility to support project deadlines and startup schedules

- Must be able to travel to assigned project locations

- Must be able to satisfy client and facility access requirements when assigned to restricted sites
