Job Summary:

The Expectant Family Education (EFE) Instructor provides quality prenatal education classes to the prenatal family. This includes planning, teaching, and promoting healthy pregnancy, prepared childbirth, and breastfeeding. Classes may include but are not limited to: Childbirth Preparation and Tour, Breastfeeding, Infant CPR, Baby Boot Camp, Big Brother Big Sister, New Dad Class, and Safe Sitter. The EFE Instructor demonstrates a strong understanding of adult and children learning principles and utilizes a variety of teaching techniques such as visual aids, charts, power point presentation lectures, and physical demonstrations of breathing patterns and relaxation skills. Participant levels of understanding are assessed by the EFE Instructor and they adapt instruction to the best advantage for their prenatal families and class participants. The EFE Instructor functions under the supervision of the Supervisor of Family Instructors. The EFE Instructor assists is maintaining a safe work environment and performs all related job responsibilities in a safe manner according to the mission statement, philosophy, purpose, policies, and standards of Roper St. Francis Healthcare (RSFH).

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

- Associates or Bachelor’s Degree required.

Experience:

- Minimum one year of experience in the maternal and child health field in childbirth and/or lactation education. Instructors of New Dad class are exempt from maternal and child health experience requirement. Teaching experience preferred.

Licensure/Certification:

- If RN or LPN must be licensed in the state of South Carolina or hold a current compact/multi-state license as a Nurse in a recognized NCSBN Compact State and is not a permanent resident of SC.
- Infant CPR Instructors require current Heart Saver or BLS certification by the American heart Association.
- Childbirth Preparation EFE Instructor required or must be obtained within 1 year of hire from a nationally recognized certification in childbirth education (ACBE, ICEA, Lamaze, or approved equivalent).
- All instructors must earn continuing education requirements as appropriate in order to maintain their applicable certification standards. Must keep current on issues and practice standards in childbirth preparation, breastfeeding and human lactation from attending workshops and EFE Quarterly Meetings.

Knowledge/Skills:

- Demonstrates exceptional customer service, strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrates ability to perform educational presentations orally. Demonstrates proficiency in computer systems to include office application programs (Power Point). Demonstrates organizational ability and a working knowledge of principles of adult and children education and learning theory. Skill in applying principles, methods, and techniques of professional nursing to provide on-going prenatal education to the prenatal family. Skill in preparing and administering course materials and evaluations. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment. Ability to analyze situations and apply critical thinking skills, provide clear communication, and reacts calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Must speak understandable English and/or Spanish for Spanish speaking classes.

- Constant interaction with internal and external customers to include (but not limited to) prenatal families, physicians, employers and visitors.

Work Demands/Environment:

- Requires full range of body motion, including frequent movement throughout the hospital campus. Handling medical equipment and supplies, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing, sitting, walking and stooping, pushing, and pulling. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires intact sense of sight, hearing and touch. Critical thinking and ability to concentrate.
