Job Description:
POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:
This role performs patient care support tasks under the instruction from the Registered Nurse (RN) and supervision of the manager. The incumbent works as a member of the Interdisciplinary Team in assisting clients with meeting their personal care needs as outlined in local Care Plans, in accordance with established organizational standards. The role contributes to the broader mission and values of The Salvation Army, upholding standards of service that reflect its spiritual and social commitment to the community.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Incumbents may perform all, some, or similar range of duties as below.
• Provide respectful, compassionate assistance with activities of daily living including bathing, dressing, toileting, mobility, feeding, and personal hygiene to promote client dignity and well-being.
• Observe and document changes in physical, emotional, or cognitive condition, including vital signs and behaviors; promptly report concerns or changes to nursing staff as per established protocols.
• Support the safe delivery of pre-packaged medications and assist with non-invasive health interventions such as oxygen therapy, ostomy care, and skin care under appropriate supervision.
• Assist with meal preparation, tray delivery, feeding, and documentation of food intake; ensure safe and sanitary food handling and respond to dietary needs/preferences as directed.
• Support a clean, safe, and organized client environment; disinfect and store equipment according to protocols and perform regular checks on equipment functionality and cleanliness.
• Provide sensitive support during palliative care and following client death, including room preparation, documentation, and coordination of belongings in accordance with procedures.
• Accurately complete all required documentation in a timely manner, including care records, assessments (e.g., Braden Scale), and checklists; contribute to care planning and interdisciplinary communication as directed.
• Actively participate in shift handovers, staff meetings, and care conferences; support colleagues, respond to call bells promptly, and contribute to a collaborative team environment.
• Promote social interaction, emotional support, and spiritual well-being through compassionate engagement; advocate for client preferences and report concerns to appropriate personnel.
• Follow all occupational health and safety policies, infection control protocols, and facility standards to ensure the safety of clients, staff, and the care environment.
• Represent the organization in a respectful and professional manner, reflecting the mission and values of The Salvation Army.
• Other related duties as assigned.
CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT:
Internal: Ministry Unit leadership, staff, and volunteers.
External : guests/clients of ministry unit in person.
MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reports directly to the: Nurse Manager
FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:
• May be involved in minor financial transactions on a regular or relief basis and is expected to exercise sound judgment in the use of organizational and personal resources.
• May be authorized to handle small amounts of cash, including disbursements and collections.
• May have access to confidential and sensitive information and is expected to maintain strict confidentiality at all times.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Work is primarily performed indoors, in the office or clients’ rooms, shared living areas, and medication areas.
within a ministry unit or facility.
• The role requires standing, walking, bending, and lifting of items up to 50 lbs.
• The incumbent may interact with individuals displaying challenging behaviours.
• This role may require shift work, work over weekends, statutory holidays and extended hours.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
• Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent plus a Health Care Aide or Personal Care Attendant Course required (or other provincial regulations).
• Certification in First Aid and CPR.
Experience and Knowledge Requirements:
• At least one year of related experience is a minimum requirement for this role.
• Experience in caring for people who require physical, emotional and psychosocial support.
• An alternative level or combination of education and experience may be acceptable.
Skills and Capabilities:
• Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
• Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
• Good oral and written communication skills.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including active listening, empathy, and the ability to work effectively with staff, clients, families, volunteers, and visitors from diverse cultural backgrounds.
• Displays initiative in identifying and completing work to be done.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to follow detailed instructions accurately.

Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $26.40 to $27.98 with a maximum of $29.55.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
