Working Pattern: 4 days office-based, 1 day home-based
Reports to: Director of Group Finance
Contract: Permanent, Full Time

London-based candidates will be expected to travel to Chesterfield as required.

Royal Mail is undergoing significant transformation as we modernise our operations, strengthen governance and build the future capability of our Finance function. As we continue this journey, we are seeking an exceptional finance leader to join our Finance Leadership Team as RM Financial Controller.

Reporting to the Director of Group Finance, this is a highly visible and influential leadership role with accountability for financial reporting integrity, financial control and balance sheet stewardship across Royal Mail and the Corporate Centre. The successful candidate will play a critical role in ensuring the highest standards of governance, reporting and control across a large, complex and strategically important UK business.

The Opportunity

As RM Financial Controller, you will lead financial control, external reporting, technical accounting, governance and key finance operations across the UK business.

You will act as a trusted adviser to senior finance leaders, Executive stakeholders, Audit Committees and Boards, ensuring robust financial stewardship while supporting major finance transformation programmes, including SAP S/4HANA implementation and wider finance modernisation initiatives.

Leading approximately 250 colleagues across multiple locations and disciplines, you will strengthen financial controls, enhance reporting capability, improve governance and foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement and technical excellence.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead all aspects of financial control, balance sheet governance and external reporting across Royal Mail and the Corporate Centre
- Own UK inputs into Group consolidation and play a senior leadership role in the delivery of robust Group external reporting
- Lead statutory reporting, annual reporting and external audit activity
- Provide expert guidance on complex accounting matters and IFRS interpretation
- Strengthen the controls environment and drive continuous improvement across governance, reporting and financial control processes
- Prepare Board and Audit Committee papers and provide insight on significant financial risks, accounting judgements and control matters
- Play a key leadership role in finance transformation programmes, ensuring governance, reporting and controls remain robust throughout change
- Lead, develop and inspire large-scale finance teams whilst building future capability across the function

About You

You will be an accomplished finance leader with a proven track record of operating within large, complex and highly regulated organisations.

You will combine outstanding technical accounting expertise with the leadership capability, judgement and influence required to operate effectively with Executive Committees, Audit Committees and Boards. You will be equally comfortable leading large teams, driving transformation and managing complex stakeholder relationships while maintaining a relentless focus on control, integrity and quality.

Essential Experience and Qualifications

- Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA or CIMA)
- Extensive leadership experience across financial accounting, external reporting and financial control
- Strong technical knowledge of IFRS and significant experience managing complex accounting judgements
- Experience supporting Group consolidation, statutory reporting and external audit activities
- Strong understanding of governance, risk management and internal control frameworks
- Experience leading large, geographically dispersed finance teams
- Proven experience delivering finance transformation, process improvement and organisational change initiatives
- Experience operating within a listed, regulated or equivalently large and complex corporate environment
