About this role
SAIC is seeking an Embedded Software Engineer Chief (Subject Matter Expert) to provide expert-level software development and engineering support for an embedded system on the Improved Data Modem (IDM) Open System Remanufacture (OSR) program, as well as other programs involving embedded systems, located in Huntsville, Alabama. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on technical leader with deep experience in embedded software development for defense systems, demonstrated expertise across the full software development lifecycle, and the ability to reverse-engineer, modernize, and integrate complex embedded software on multiple hardware and aircraft platforms.
The Embedded Software Engineer Chief will be responsible for but not limited to the following duties:
- Lead design, development, integration, and sustainment of embedded IDM software across multiple hardware platforms and aircraft (Apache, Blackhawk, and Chinook).
- Analyze and reverse-engineer complex embedded, soft real-time IDM Ada and C/C++ code spanning multiple product versions and processor architectures.
- Port legacy embedded software from LynxOS / Intel platforms to Wind River Linux / PowerPC platforms, ensuring functional equivalence and performance.
- Develop, maintain, and execute software unit tests and component/integration tests for multi-threaded and/or multi-process embedded applications.
- Apply and enforce full software development lifecycle practices and software development processes and procedures, including Agile/Scrum methodologies.
- Configure, build, and maintain bootloaders, kernels, and associated artifacts (e.g., U-Boot, flash kernel images) for embedded targets.
- Utilize GNAT Ada and GCC C/C++ compilers, Wind River Linux, Green Hills MULTI IDE, and INTEGRITY-178 tuMP RTOS to develop and debug embedded software.
- Implement and troubleshoot communications using TCP/IP/UDP and defense communications protocols including MIL-STD-1553, MIL-STD-6017, MIL-STD-188-220, and MIL-STD-47001.
- Configure, monitor, and manage Blue Force Tracker (BFT) 1, BFT 2, and associated network architectures.
- Develop and maintain Perl and Bash scripts to automate build, integration, test, and deployment workflows.
- Use Azure DevOps for configuration management, work tracking, CI/CD, and collaborative development.
- Provide technical leadership and subject matter expertise for reconfigurable air defense efforts and future capability development, including open systems and modular architectures.
- Collaborate with systems, hardware, test, and airworthiness teams to ensure software integration, safety, and performance requirements are met.
Required Education:
- Bachelor's degree and eighteen (18) years’ experience; additional four (4) years’ experience can be considered in lieu of degree.
Required Clearance:
- Must possess an active Secret security clearance with the ability to maintain; US Citizenship required.
Required Skills:
- Extensive hands-on experience in embedded software development using C/C++ on real-time and soft real-time systems, including multi-threaded and/or multi-process applications, debugging, and performance optimization.
- Demonstrated SME-level experience with embedded OS and tools, including Wind River Linux, embedded Linux, INTEGRITY-178 tuMP RTOS, TOS, ARINC-653-based systems, Green Hills MULTI IDE, and low-level software such as U-Boot, kernel flashing, and hardware bring-up.
- Proven experience across the full software development lifecycle and Agile/Scrum development processes, including use of Azure DevOps (or similar) for source control, CI/CD, and work tracking, plus Perl and Bash scripting for automation.
- Strong background analyzing and reverse-engineering large, complex Ada and C/C++ codebases for legacy embedded defense systems, and integrating software into Army aviation platforms (e.g., Apache, Blackhawk, Chinook) in accordance with defense communication protocols (TCP/IP/UDP, MIL-STD-1553, MIL-STD-6017, MIL-STD-188-220, MIL-STD-47001) and network architecture concepts.
