Associate Engineer

What you will do

Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. In this role the Associate Engineer reports to the Senior Manager of the Engineering group. The position is responsible for providing daily process, equipment, maintenance, and reliability engineering support at the Amgen Rhode Island site.

Scope of Responsibility

- Apply engineering principles to support the operation, maintenance, and improvement of process systems used in commercial and clinical manufacturing.

- Provide technical and field support to troubleshoot process equipment and control issues, identify causes of poor performance, and implement solutions.

- Coordinate with Manufacturing, Process Engineering, Process Development, Utility Operations, Maintenance, Quality Assurance, and Validation to resolve issues and implement operational improvements.

- Organize and analyze data, then present results and recommendations for operational issues, maintenance activities, and engineering projects.

- Support the design, construction, startup, commissioning, and qualification of new or modified systems, completing assigned work under the direction of lead engineers and within schedule and budget constraints.

- Improve equipment and maintenance information in Maximo, including equipment records, job plans, spare parts, safety information, and preventive maintenance schedules.

- Support maintenance planning and execution, and advance condition-based and predictive maintenance practices using data analytics where applicable.

- Investigate abnormal conditions through Deviation and INCA processes, with guidance appropriate to the scope and complexity of the issue.

- Work with engineers and technicians on ongoing operations and projects. Communicate progress, issues, and proposed solutions to supervisors and support teams.

- Participate in a rotating 24/7 on-call schedule to support process systems, including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed

The onboarding phase for this role will last approximately 2–6 weeks, during which time successful incumbents will become familiar with site operations, engineering systems, quality processes, safety expectations, and cross-functional ways of working. This is a days-based role, generally aligned to an administrative schedule, with flexibility required to support business needs, critical operations, shutdowns, investigations, or occasional off-hours issues as necessary.

Basic Qualifications

- High school diploma / GED and 6 years of engineering experience OR

- Associate’s degree and 4 years of engineering experience OR

- Bachelor’s degree

Preferred Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related technical field

- Strong written and verbal skills and the ability to work with minimum direction.

- Demonstrated interpersonal and facilitation skills and ability to work in a collaborative team-based environment.

- Ability to apply analytical skills to evaluate and interpret sophisticated problems using multiple sources of information.

- Ability to function within cross-functional teams and embrace a team-based environment.

- Experience with Mammalian Cell Culture, Protein Purification, Clean Utilities, CIP, SIP, Production Services and non-GMP Utilities.

- Familiarity with designing and operating equipment used in biopharmaceutical manufacturing.

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
