POSITION: Peer Recovery Specialist
PROGRAM: Culture Language Arts Network of the Minneapolis American Indian Center
SALARY: $24.00 Per Hour/Part-time/Non-Exempt
Overview
The Peer Recovery Specialist with help support cultural activities, teachings, and discussions that promote healing, wellness, and recovery through connection to American Indian cultural practices and values. The Peer will work collaboratively with project staff, community members, and elders to continue to provide recovery services.
Responsibilities
- Provide recovery resource navigation and advocacy for participants via one-on-one or group support.
- Explore resources that support recovery and are available to participants in the community.
- Provide education, advocacy, and mentoring through self-disclosure of personal recovery experiences.
- Help accessing resources to obtain housing, employment, education, and advocacy services.
- Provide non-clinical recovery support to assist the transition from treatment into the recovery community.
- Assist participants with directions and provide guidance.
- Maintain positive public relations with referring agencies and businesses in the community.
- Locate appropriate staff members and/or supervisors to respond to client needs when necessary.
- Responsible for light documentation; Ability to do data entry in record system.
- Possess a working knowledge of issues regarding confidentiality.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of American Indian culture, traditions, teachings, and community practices.
- Experience facilitating cultural, educational, community, wellness, or recovery-focused activities.
- Experience working with individuals and families impacted by substance use, recovery, or behavioral health challenges preferred.
- Strong communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse community members and stakeholders.
- Lived experience in recovery or experience supporting recovery communities is valued.
- Commitment to culturally responsive and strengths-based approaches.
Education and/or experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED), or one to three months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have a minimum of one year in recovery from substance use disorder; Experience in a non-for-profit.
Experience doing street outreach and/or working within the local Native American community preferred.
Certificates, licenses and registrations required: Current credential from the Minnesota Certification Board, the Upper Midwest Indian Council on Addictive Disorders, or the National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors.
