JOB SUMMARY :
Under the direction of the Community Development Director, the Plumbing/Mechanical Inspector inspects plumbing, mechanical systems and building construction in and on public and private buildings by visual observation and by use of mechanical testing of equipment to ensure compliance with established state and federal codes and laws.
ILLUSTRATIVE JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Explains, both verbally and in writing, the plumbing codes to architects, engineers, owners, contractors, plumbers, and the public. Inspects approved plans, specifications and permit applications, permits issued, and building plans for proposed work projects.
- Coordinates issues with contractors and residents during construction process or complaints.
- Inspects, with visual observation and mechanical testing equipment, new installations and alterations of plumbing and drainage systems in residential, commercial and industrial buildings and premises to determine conformance with safety standards, ordinances, and codes.
- Issues written notices of code violations requiring corrective action.
- Keeps accurate records of all inspections, code violations, and complaints, etc.
- Provides a high level of customer service to City staff, public, and businesses.
- Evaluates and recommends revisions for procedures, policies, and rules in conformance with plumbing inspection policies and applicable codes.
- Drive to the inspection site and perform the required inspections.
- Performs related work as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Ability to read, interpret and apply codes, laws, rules, and regulations relative to plumbing plans and specifications.
- Knowledge of state and national plumbing codes and related laws and regulations.
- Knowledge of the standard practices, processes, tools, equipment, and materials of the plumbing trade.
- Knowledge of plumbing inspection techniques and practices.
- Ability to effectively organize work and set priorities.
- Ability to observe critically, plumbing installations or alterations, obtain accurate data and prepare reports.
- Basic problem solving skills with good communication and listening skills.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the both the public and other City employees.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work.
- Work independently and as part of a team to effectively to meet day-to-day operational deadlines.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS :
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent, required.
- Must possess and maintain a journeyman plumber's license issued by the state of Michigan.
- A minimum of four years of experience in the plumbing trade, including two years equivalent to a journey-level plumber, required.
- Must meet the requirements of Act 54 of 1986 and be registered as a plumbing inspector and plan reviewer of the State of Michigan.
- Possession and maintenance of a valid driver's license .
