About the role:

The R&D Technician II supports testing, equipment maintenance, and laboratory operations within the Packaging Engineering Laboratory. This role performs physical package testing, assists with test method validation activities, supports equipment troubleshooting and maintenance, and contributes to the continuous improvement of laboratory processes and capabilities.

The ideal candidate possesses strong mechanical aptitude, enjoys hands-on work, and can independently troubleshoot and resolve equipment-related issues while supporting daily laboratory operations.

At Boston Scientific, we value collaboration and synergy. This role follows onsite work model, requiring employees to be in our local office five days per week.

Your responsibilities will include:

Laboratory Testing & Technical Support

- Perform packaging and product testing in accordance with approved procedures, protocols, and standards.

- Collect, document, and organize test data to support engineering projects and regulatory requirements.

- Assist engineers in executing test method validations, equipment qualifications, and development activities.

- Prepare samples, fixtures, and equipment required for testing activities.

- Support laboratory scheduling and prioritization of testing requests.

Equipment Maintenance & Troubleshooting

- Perform routine preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment to ensure reliable operation.

- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic issues on testing systems and auxiliary equipment.

- Diagnose equipment failures and coordinate internal or external repair activities as needed.

- Assist in installation, qualification, calibration, and commissioning of new laboratory equipment.

- Maintain equipment records, maintenance logs, and calibration documentation.

- Identify opportunities for improving equipment reliability, ease of operation, and laboratory efficiency.

Fixture Design & Fabrication Support

- Assemble, modify, and repair test fixtures and laboratory tooling.

- Assist with fabrication of custom fixtures, sample holders, and testing accessories.

- Work with engineers and vendors to support equipment modifications and improvements.

- Interpret technical drawings, assembly instructions, and equipment manuals.

Continuous Improvement

- Support laboratory 5S, safety, and continuous improvement initiatives.

- Identify opportunities to streamline testing processes and reduce equipment downtime.

- Participate in root cause investigations involving equipment and testing issues.

- Contribute to development and revision of standard operating procedures and work instructions.

Required Qualifications:

- High School Diploma or equivalent.

- Minimum 2 years of experience in a laboratory, manufacturing, quality, engineering support, or technical environment.

- Ability to follow detailed procedures and work independently.

- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.

- Experience using hand tools, measurement equipment, and basic shop equipment.

- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, manuals, and procedures.

- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

- Strong organizational and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Experience maintaining laboratory or manufacturing equipment.

- Experience with mechanical, pneumatic, and basic electrical systems.

- Experience supporting calibration and preventive maintenance programs.

- Experience with packaging, medical device, or regulated laboratory environments.

- Familiarity with ASTM testing standards.

- Experience supporting equipment qualification, validation, or process improvement activities.

- Experience using CMMS, calibration, or asset management systems.

- Ability to fabricate or modify fixtures and test setups.

Compensation will be commensurate with demonstrable level of experience and training, pertinent education including licensure and certifications, among other relevant business or organizational needs. Compensation for non-exempt (hourly), non-sales roles may also include variable compensation from time to time (e.g., any overtime and shift differential) and annual bonus target (subject to plan eligibility and other requirements).
