Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Container Solution Architect to join our federal government account. In this critical senior role, you will design, architect, and lead the implementation of enterprise-scale containerised solutions across complex distributed environments. You will serve as the technical authority on container strategy, ensuring alignment with federal compliance requirements, enterprise standards, and organisational objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Architecture & Solution Design

- Design and architect enterprise-wide container strategies and roadmaps aligned with federal government standards and compliance requirements
- Lead solution design initiatives for containerised applications across multiple business units and departments

- Establish enterprise container architecture standards, patterns, and best practices
- Ensure architectural decisions meet security, compliance, and performance requirements specific to federal government operations
- Evaluate and recommend container technologies, platforms, and tooling solutions

Technical Leadership & Project Leadership

- Serve as technical lead on enterprise container platform initiatives and cloud modernisation projects

- Guide and mentor engineering teams on containerization best practices and architectural patterns
- Promote platform engineering practices through reusable architectures, automation patterns, self-service capabilities and standardised deployment models.
- Lead cross-functional teams in the design and implementation of container solutions
- Provide technical oversight and governance for container-based deployments
- Establish architectural review processes and serve as primary reviewer for container solutions

Azure Cloud & Kubernetes Management

- Lead the design and implementation of Azure Container solutions within the enterprise
- Architect and oversee Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) deployments and cluster management
- Establish AKS governance, security policies, and operational standards
- Ensure AKS platform architecture aligns with enterprise Azure Landing Zone standards, including governance, networking, identity and operational controls.
- Manage container registry strategies and image security across Azure environments
- Implement container networking, storage, and security architectures on Azure

- Lead cloud infrastructure planning and optimisation for container workloads

Cloud Modernisation & Solutioning

- Drive enterprise migration initiatives from traditional infrastructure to containerized solutions

- Lead solution development for complex technical challenges related to containerisation

- Architect hybrid and multi-cloud container strategies where applicable
- Ensure solutions align with Australian Government security frameworks including ISM, PSPF, Essential Eight and relevant IRAP controls
- Develop and present architectural recommendations to executive and technical stakeholders

OpenShift & Hybrid Platforms

- Evaluate OpenShift as an alternative or supplementary containerisation platform where appropriate

- Support multi-platform container strategies that may include OpenShift implementations
- Ensure interoperability between Azure-hosted and on-premises container platforms

Security & Compliance

- Ensure all container architectures meet federal government security requirements
- Implement container security best practices, including image scanning, runtime security, and access controls
- Design and implement container platform architectures aligned with Zero Trust principles, leveraging Microsoft Entra ID, Managed Identities, workload identities and least-privilege access controls.
- Lead security reviews and vulnerability assessments for container solutions
- Maintain compliance with federal information security standards and agency-specific requirements

Operational Excellence

- Establish container orchestration, monitoring, and logging standards

- Establish observability standards including monitoring, logging, tracing and performance analytics across containerized workloads and platform services.

- Develop operational runbooks and disaster recovery procedures for containerised environments
- Monitor container platform performance, capacity, and cost optimisation

- Implement CI/CD pipelines and container deployment automation

Required Qualifications

Experience

- 10+ years of IT architecture and infrastructure design experience

- 7+ years of hands-on experience with containerisation technologies (Docker, Kubernetes)

- 5+ years of enterprise architecture in large-scale, multi-team environments
- 5+ years of cloud architecture experience in enterprise environments
- Required: 3+ years of hands-on experience with Azure and AKS
- Demonstrated experience leading technical teams and architecture initiatives
- Experience designing solutions for federal government environments or equivalent regulated industries
- Must be an Australian Citizen and be eligible to obtain and maintain an Australian Government Baseline Security Clearance. NV1 eligibility is highly desirable.

Technical Skills

- Expert-level proficiency in Azure Cloud Services (required)
- Expert-level proficiency in Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) (required)
- Advanced Kubernetes administration and architecture skills
- Container orchestration and microservices architecture design
- Container security, networking, and storage implementation
- Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform, ARM templates, Bicep)
- Experience with container registries and image management
- CI/CD pipeline design and implementation
- Cloud networking, security, and compliance architecture
- OpenShift experience is a plus

Certifications & Education

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent professional experience)
- Azure certifications required: Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305), or
- Azure Administrator (AZ-104) plus additional Azure certifications

- Kubernetes certification (CKA, CKAD, or equivalent) strongly preferred

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience with OpenShift or Red Hat container technologies
- Experience with federal government cloud programs (Azure Government, FedRAMP)
- Familiarity with service mesh technologies (Istio, Linkerd)
- Demonstrated experience in DevOps transformation initiatives
- Published articles, presentations, or open-source contributions in cloud architecture
- Prior federal government experience or DoD/IC background
- Federal compliance certifications (ISM, PSPF, Essential Eight and relevant IRAP controls) a plus
