Overview
JOB SUMMARY: The transporter is responsible for bringing patients to and from the nursing unit to the unit or from the nursing unit to the ancillary department where procedure will be performed. The transporter is responsible for picking up requisitions, requests, Doctor's orders from patient care units and deliver to the designated ancillary (non-nursing) departments. The transporter will pick up non-stat medications from pharmacy, test results from file sorter located in clinical laboratory and distribute to the designated nursing units' contact person. The transporter will make hourly runs to the areas listed on the runner schedule. All the transporters and runners reporting to nursing administration will be cross trained for both duties.
Responsibilities
Patient Transport & Care
- Identify and report changes in patient behavioral and physical conditions to appropriate care team members promptly.
- Assist nursing units in evaluating and determining patient readiness prior to transport.
- Coordinate additional assistance for patient transport when clinically indicated (e.g., patients with multiple IV lines).
- Safely transport patients to designated locations according to facility policies, maintaining appropriate speed, privacy, and comfort.
- Verify patient identification prior to initiating transport and implement care plans established by the healthcare team.
- Ensure proper attachment and positioning of medical equipment and apparatus (e.g., IV lines, Foley bags) prior to and during movement.
Communication & Collaboration
- Maintain open, accurate, and timely communication with patients, families, and multidisciplinary healthcare team members.
- Provide clear, objective hand-off reports to oncoming shifts and supervisors regarding patient care status.
- Offer compassionate emotional support and clear explanations to patients and their families to set and manage care expectations.
- Collaborate with nursing staff on delegated care responsibilities and unit needs as time permits.
Safety & Compliance
- Apply required safety measures (e.g., securing gurney straps, side rails, wheelchair safety features) during all transports.
- Adhere strictly to isolation techniques, universal precautions, and hazardous substance handling protocols.
- Promptly report environmental hazards, unusual occurrences, and incident documentation using established facility systems.
- Maintain strict patient confidentiality and safeguard medical records in compliance with departmental policies and HIPAA regulations.
- Follow proper body mechanics and safety techniques to prevent injury to self, patients, and staff.
Qualifications
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING
- A minimum of six (6) months acute hospital experience preferred.
- A current CPR card (must be from AHA) is required or must be completed by the end of orientation.
- Proficiency in both written and oral communication skills.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
