About this role
At Northbay Health, the Physician Assistant (PA) Surgical Ortho Trauma functions as a member of the multidisciplinary patient care provider team. The Physician Assistant is a health professional with advanced education and/or training in the care of the pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric populations, to include ambulatory and surgical care.
This PA p rovides care to patients within the ambulatory medical office, Ortho Trauma team as well as perform as surgical assistant to qualified surgeons within the hospital operating room and ambulatory surgery center settings. Under the medical supervision of a qualified and accredited physician, the Physician Assistant works in ongoing collaboration within the inpatient and ambulatory practice settings and as articulated within his or her scope of practice as defined by the State of California.
PRIMARY JOB DUTIES
- Daily inpatient rounding and comprehensive patient assessments
- Evaluation and management of Orthopedic trauma patients
- New patient and emergency department/inpatient consultations
- Development and implementation of treatment plans in collaboration with the orthopedic surgeons
- Order, interpret, and communicate diagnostic tests and imaging results
- Neurovascular and musculoskeletal examinations
- Coordination of patient care throughout the hospitalization
- Communication and collaboration with the trauma team and other consulting services
- Coordination with social work, case management, physical therapy, occupational therapy, rehabilitation, and other ancillary services
- Patient and family education regarding diagnosis, treatment plans, postoperative care, and discharge needs
- Assistance with discharge planning and appropriate follow-up
- Maintain timely, accurate clinical documentation and orders
- Participate in quality improvement initiative and patient care planning
- Assists in surgical cases when time and service demands allow
- Some work in the outpatient clinic is possible but secondary to inpatient responsibilities.

1. Education : Graduate of an accredited physician assistant program approved by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Evidence of training related to functioning as a surgical first assistant is mandatory.
2. Licensure/Credentials: Current Physician Assistant licensure by the State of California Physician Assistant Examining Committee. AHA ALS required. Maintains a current Furnishing Number for medications. Maintains a current DEA license for schedule II drugs and above or can achieve within 60 days of hire.
3. Experience: Minimum of three years of experience as a Physician Assistant practicing in a related field. Minimum of two years’ experience as a surgical first assistant.
4. Skills: Demonstrates ability to evaluate patient’s physical and emotional status. Demonstrates ability to provide patient care based on age-related needs. Demonstrates current knowledge and skill in providing appropriate care for patients in the following age groups: adult, adolescent, pediatric and geriatric. Proven expertise in the area of surgical preparation and role as first assistant to surgeons within the hospital and/or ambulatory setting. EHR, computer, MS Word, Outlook experience required.
