About this role
Gravis Robotics is a high-growth Series A start-up backed by SoftBank, bringing Physical AI to the construction industry, turning heavy construction machines into autonomous robots.
Gravis began as an ETH Zurich spin-out, and our unique combination of learning-based automation and augmented remote control lets one operator safely conduct a fleet of earthmoving machines in a gamified environment.
Backed by deep robotics research and now deployed across multiple countries with leading construction and equipment partners, our team is rapidly growing to bring this technology to a trillion-dollar industry.
The Gravis RACK is a machine-agnostic retrofit kit that adds autonomy to excavators and wheel loaders from 10 to 100+ tonnes: LiDAR and camera sensing, GNSS RTK, networking hardware and rugged edge compute that works offline. Paired with the Slate tablet and our Copilot software, it lets an operator run a machine manually, with AI assistance, or fully autonomously. Increasingly, we also build custom hardware to adapt our machines for highly specialized, robust applications beyond traditional excavation.
About the role
We are looking for a workshop and facilities technician to own our mechanical workshop that allows our engineers to build world class autonomous excavators at Gravis. You will work with our teams in Zurich to help with our everyday operations to support our development of custom AI hardware for safe and reliable operation of heavy machines. You are capable of working both independently and with others, and are intrinsically driven to solve challenging applied problems with a rigorous attention to detail and an exploratory imagination.
What you will do
- Workshop ownership
- Run our mechanical workshop: layout, storage, tools, cleanliness, and safety
- Manage tools and machines from procurement over calibration to servicing and repair
- Keep measurement instruments in a state where we can trust the data
- Facilities and site work
- Handle the everyday physical work around the offices and workshop: installs, furniture, moves, mounting, repairs, small builds
- Coordinate external contractors for ventilation, electrical, HVAC, and larger works brief them, check their work, sign it off
- Plan and execute workshop moves and reconfigurations
- Production support
- Work alongside our production engineers on assembly, test, and final inspection of units
- Learn the full build and test process well enough to run it independently during holidays, sick leave, and demand peaks. This is a core part of the role, not an occasional favour
- Kitting, incoming inspection, rework, and documentation of the assembly process
- Shipping, receiving, and logistics
- Pack and crate hardware properly, including heavy and sensitive equipment
- Receive, inspect, and route incoming goods
What we're looking for
- Polymechaniker EFZ, or equivalent like Automatiker EFZ, Anlagen- und Apparatebauer EFZ, Konstrukteur EFZ, or comparable practical experience
- 3+ years of working in a workshop, fabrication shop, or comparable environment
- Solid bench and machine skills: bandsaw, drill press, angle grinder, layout, measurement
- Attention to detail, manual dexterity
- Driving licence (Cat. B)
- Comfortable with a computer: inventory lists, supplier portals, a ticket queue, email
- Good command of German and English
Beneficial Experience
- Experience in a prototype, R&D or serial production environment
- Basic CAD experience
- Familiarity with ERP or inventory systems
- MIG/MAG/TIG welding, sheet metal work, painting and surface prep
- Experience in hand soldering
