The Nova Scotia Accessibility Directorate is a dynamic and committed team that is leading and coordinating Nova Scotia’s work towards the goal to become an accessible province by 2030. We work together with persons with disabilities, community organizations, businesses, municipalities, post-secondary institutions and other partners to advance the cultural shift needed.
The Accessibility Directorate has built strong relationships across government and with public sector and community partners to support their efforts to improve accessibility, including the Government’s accessibility plan. We lead the development of accessibility standards in the areas of education, employment, service delivery, public transportation, and information and communication. The Directorate also leads the implementation and enforcement of the Built Environment Accessibility Standard Regulation. Additionally, we develop accessibility awareness resources, tools and awareness activities to help create more accessible and inclusive communities.
About Our Opportunity
As Compliance and Enforcement Coordinator, you will support the Accessibility Directorate’s compliance and enforcement activities. You will track compliance inquiries, coordinate compliance monitoring and reporting, and conduct inspection and enforcement activities as needed. You will work with public sector bodies, government departments, businesses, and the public to advance understanding and compliance with the legislation. You will work with Directorate staff to develop and implement compliance strategies, processes, resources.
The Compliance and Enforcement Coordinator reports to the Manager of Compliance and Capacity Building.
Primary Accountabilities
In this role, you will regularly:
• Receive and respond to general inquiries related to accessibility and application of the Accessibility Act (Act) and Accessibility Standard Regulations. This includes triaging inquiries and preparing responses, that are accurate, clear, and consistent.
• Monitor prescribed public sector bodies’ compliance with accessibility plan and accessibility advisory committee requirements and provide guidance and identify available supports.
• Receive and respond to complaints of non-compliance in relation to the Act and regulations, under the supervision and guidance of the Manager of Compliance and Capacity Building.
• Maintain and manage the compliance and enforcement database.
• Support the collection and reporting of data related to compliance and enforcement activities.
You will occasionally:
• Conduct inspections and document findings in relation to non-compliance and issue compliance orders as needed, under the supervision and direction of the Manager of Compliance and Capacity Building.
• Assist in developing, implementing, and improving processes and guidelines to support effective compliance and enforcement program delivery and implementation.
• Contribute to the development and facilitation of information and educational materials related to compliance and enforcement.
• Support public events and conferences regarding outreach and education presentations to prescribed public sector bodies and other organizations.
• Liaise with partners across government, public sector bodies, businesses, community organizations and others on compliance and enforcement issues and activities.
Qualifications and Experience
Competencies assessed for the position include:
• A bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 1 year in a related field. An equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered.
• Experience conducting inspections, auditing or other compliance and enforcement activities to support regulatory programs.
• Experience managing databases and collecting, organizing, and analyzing information.
• Experience working with the public, including persons in distress.
• Competency using Microsoft applications including Excel, Word, Outlook and Copilot to record, organize and analyze information
• Strong organizational skills and ability to balance multiple tasks and deliverables within tight timelines.
• The ability to work independently with limited supervision.
• Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate complex information in a simple, clear and accessible manner.
• Cultural competency working with persons with disabilities and diverse backgrounds.
• An understanding of, and commitment to, the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
The following are assets in assessing for the position:
• Experience and expertise in accessibility and disability issues.
• Experience and expertise in relation to the built environment codes and standards.
• Written or verbal fluency in French.
Qualifications and competencies will be assessed using one or more of the following tools: written assignment, presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions
- Majority of time is spent in a comfortable office setting with frequent opportunity to move about at will
- Some site visits as required

Pay Grade: PR 06 - PR 10
Salary Range: $2,112.87 - $3,029.89 Bi-Weekly
