We value flexibility and have adopted a hybrid work model whereby employees use a combination of working remotely 2 days a week and in the office for 3 days in Toronto’s Financial District.

Role Purpose

Reporting to the VP, Technology & Application Development, the Principal CRM Developer is the senior hands-on engineer for the technology that powers the CAO's digital services, the majority of which is built on Microsoft Dynamics 365. This is a technical leadership role without direct reports. The Principal CRM Developer leads CRM projects and sets the technical direction for the platform while spending most of their time (80%) building, which includes designing, coding, reviewing and shipping solutions. The role combines deep Dynamics 365 and Power Platform expertise with genuine custom software development experience in areas such as microservices and APIs, clean code and clean architecture, automated testing and CI/CD. Working closely with the development team, IT and business stakeholders, the Principal CRM Developer designs reliable, secure and maintainable solutions, leads their delivery from discovery through deployment, raises the engineering bar for the developers around them, and applies CAO's engineering standards, including the CAO AI-Native SDLC Engineering Playbook, to the CRM and to the projects that connect to it.

Key Responsibilities

Development & Delivery (80%)

- Provide hands-on development expertise in Dynamics 365 CRM on a weekly basis, including plugins, custom APIs, PCF controls, JavaScript, configuration and solution design, applying platform best practices and deep technical knowledge.

- Lead CRM projects from discovery through automated testing, deployment and hypercare, using Agile methods and keeping stakeholders informed at every stage.

- Design and build custom components that work alongside Dynamics 365, such as .NET services and APIs, Azure Functions, Service Bus messaging and Logic Apps, following clean code and clean architecture principles with clear service boundaries, dependency management and error handling.

- Design and implement integrations between Dynamics 365 and third-party or in-house systems across on-premises and cloud environments, including API design, asynchronous messaging, idempotency, retry handling and monitoring.

- Configure and customize Dynamics 365 to meet business needs, choosing deliberately between configuration, low-code tools such as Power Automate and Power Apps, and custom code based on maintainability, cost and risk.

- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for Dynamics solutions and custom components with a DevSecOps mindset, including source-controlled solutions, automated quality gates and managed deployments, and expand automated testing across unit, integration and regression coverage.

- Lead code review for CRM and related work, and set the standard for readable, testable and well-documented code across the team.

- Apply CRM AI and Microsoft Copilot tools, including Copilot Studio, where they deliver genuine value, and use AI-assisted development responsibly within CAO's software development lifecycle.

- Manage technical debt through proactive refactoring and system improvements to ensure long-term reliability and efficiency.

- Identify and resolve technical issues promptly, minimizing disruption and maintaining high quality standards.

Engineering Standards & Practice (10%)

- Apply and champion CAO's engineering standards and playbooks, including the CAO AI-Native SDLC Engineering Playbook, across CRM work, and help extend those practices to other projects and platforms in the CAO portfolio.

- Coach and mentor developers, business analysts and quality assurance professionals on Dynamics 365, custom development, testing and delivery practices, without direct line management responsibility.

- Contribute reusable patterns, templates, reference implementations and documentation that make CAO's standards easier for other teams to adopt.

- Work with quality assurance to define what "done" means for CRM changes, including test coverage expectations, release notes and operational readiness.

Architecture & Planning (10%)

- Design scalable, secure and maintainable enterprise solutions, defining application architecture, integration strategy and technical roadmaps for the CRM platform and the services around it.

- Define, document and communicate solution, application and data architectures, including system architecture and configuration guides, and keep them current.

- Determine what belongs in Dynamics 365 and what should be built elsewhere, weighing data ownership, volume, user experience, integration complexity, licensing, security and cost.

- Apply enterprise data management and governance practices, including data classification, information lifecycle management, privacy, access controls and auditing.

- Research and recommend emerging technologies, including AI and Copilot capabilities, that improve system development while balancing cost-effectiveness, flexibility and security.

- Advise on best practices for Dynamics 365 development and integration, and oversee the deployment, integration and configuration of new solutions in line with operational and security standards.

- Contribute to strategic planning and tactical execution of system maintenance, optimization and software management.

Other

- Perform other related duties as assigned.

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field.

- 7+ years of hands-on experience in Dynamics 365 CRM development, including customization, extensibility, plugins, custom APIs, PCF controls, workflows and custom entities, with recent and personal hands-on work.

- Demonstrated custom software development experience beyond the CRM platform, including building .NET services, APIs or microservices using clean code and clean architecture principles, automated testing and CI/CD.

- Strong proficiency in C#, with solid experience in modern .NET, RESTful API design and version control with Git.

- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, DevSecOps practices and automated testing frameworks, including unit testing of plugin and service code and automated regression testing with Playwright or a similar tool.
