We are looking for an Accounting Associate to join our Accounting & Bookkeeping team within the Tax practice in Bucharest. You will manage the day-to-day accounting activities for a portfolio of clients, ensuring accurate bookkeeping, month-end closing, financial reporting and compliance with Romanian accounting requirements while developing your expertise in a professional services environment.

What will you actually do?
You will work as part of an Accounting & Bookkeeping team, managing the day-to-day accounting activities for a portfolio of clients and supporting the delivery of accurate accounting records, financial reporting and statutory compliance requirements.
Core responsibilities
Accounting operations & bookkeeping (ownership)
Manage day-to-day accounting activities for assigned clients, including recording accounting transactions, reviewing supporting documentation and ensuring completeness and accuracy of accounting records in accordance with Romanian accounting regulations and internal methodologies.
Month-end closing & reconciliations
Perform month-end closing activities, including supplier, customer, bank, cash, payroll and tax reconciliations. Prepare trial balances, accounting schedules and closing files while identifying and investigating discrepancies.
Financial statements preparation
Support the preparation of statutory financial statements and annual reporting packages by preparing reconciliations, supporting schedules and accounting analyses required under Romanian accounting regulations and IFRS where applicable.
Accounting treatment of transactions
Review and analyse accounting transactions, including accruals, provisions, fixed assets, intercompany transactions and accounting corrections. Identify non-standard accounting situations and propose preliminary accounting treatment while escalating more complex matters when necessary.
Accounting-related tax compliance
Prepare VAT, Corporate Income Tax, Withholding Tax and other recurring tax compliance working files as part of the accounting closing process. Support the preparation and submission of tax returns and reconciliations related to accounting activities.
Client portfolio management
Take responsibility for the accounting delivery of allocated clients, ensuring deadlines are met and deliverables are prepared in line with engagement requirements and internal quality standards.
Audit support
Act as a primary contact for routine audit requests related to your client portfolio, preparing reconciliations, confirmations and supporting documentation required during annual audits.
Tools, process improvement & automation
Work with ERP systems, automated posting solutions and OCR technologies to ensure data quality and improve efficiency in accounting and compliance processes. Contribute ideas for streamlining routine activities and improving the quality of deliverables.
Additional responsibilities
- Support senior team members with accounting and compliance projects, implementation of new accounting processes and updates driven by regulatory changes.
- Provide day-to-day guidance to interns and junior colleagues on routine accounting activities and internal procedures.

Experience & background
Professional experience
- Typically 1-3 years of experience in accounting, accounting outsourcing, bookkeeping or tax compliance environments.
Education & qualifications
- University Degree in Accounting or Finance (completed).
- Enrolment in or interest in professional qualifications (e.g. CECCAR, ACCA) would be a plus.
Functional knowledge
- Good understanding of Romanian accounting principles and practical accounting processes.
- Practical experience with bookkeeping, month-end closing activities, reconciliations, fixed assets, accruals and preparation of accounting records.
- Familiarity with VAT, Corporate Income Tax and other recurring compliance obligations associated with accounting activities.
- Exposure to preparation of tax returns and statutory financial statements would be considered an advantage.
Tools & methods
- Solid Excel skills (formulas, lookups, pivot tables and standard reporting) and good command of Microsoft Office applications.
- Experience with accounting software (Winmentor preferred); exposure to SAP, Navision, Ciel or other ERP systems would be a plus.
- Openness to work with automated posting tools, OCR solutions and new technologies.
Communication & language
- Upper-intermediate / Advanced English skills, both written and spoken; fluent Romanian.
- Ability to communicate clearly with colleagues and client contacts and document work in a structured, professional manner.
