About this role
The Middle School Tennis Coach plays a vital role in creating a safe, positive, and engaging environment for student-athletes participating in the school’s athletics program. Working under the supervision of the Athletic Director, the Tennis Coach is responsible for teaching fundamental tennis skills, leading practices, preparing student-athletes for competition, and fostering sportsmanship, teamwork, confidence, and character development.
This position is ideal for individuals who enjoy working with middle school students, have a strong knowledge of tennis, and bring enthusiasm, leadership, and positive energy to the program. The coach is responsible for helping student-athletes develop their tennis skills and understanding of the game while emphasizing respect, accountability, discipline, and sportsmanship. The coach will help ensure every athlete feels included, challenged, and supported throughout the season while maintaining a safe and organized environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and lead organized, developmentally appropriate middle school tennis practices.
- Teach fundamental tennis skills, including serving, forehand and backhand strokes, volleys, footwork, court positioning, and match play.
- Teach singles and doubles strategy, scoring, rules, and proper tennis etiquette.
- Supervise student-athletes during practices, matches, and team activities to ensure safety and positive participation.
- Develop practice plans that emphasize skill development, conditioning, match preparation, and sportsmanship.
- Evaluate athletes and determine appropriate singles and doubles lineups for competition.
- Encourage teamwork, inclusion, confidence, and positive communication among players.
- Foster a culture of accountability, discipline, respect, and character.
- Provide positive coaching, constructive feedback, and encouragement to athletes of varying skill levels.
- Prepare the team for league competition while maintaining a positive and engaging experience for student-athletes.
- Communicate effectively with the Athletic Director, parents, and student-athletes regarding schedules, expectations, and team updates.
- Ensure tennis equipment and facilities are properly maintained and used safely.
Program Support
- Collaborate with the Athletic Director to support the vision and continued growth of the athletics program.
- Assist with organizing practices, match-day logistics, lineups, and team equipment.
- Promote proper warm-up, conditioning, injury prevention, and safe participation.
- Model professionalism, integrity, sportsmanship, and positive leadership on and off the court.
- Help promote the tennis program while creating an enjoyable, developmental, and competitive experience for all student-athletes.
Staff Collaboration
- Communicate effectively with fellow coaches, the Athletic Director, and school staff regarding athlete needs and schedule adjustments.
- Maintain consistent expectations for athlete behavior, attendance, effort, and participation.
- Participate in staff meetings and required training sessions as needed.
- Work collaboratively with school personnel to support student-athletes both on and off the court.
Safety & Professional Expectations
- Maintain continuous awareness of student-athlete safety and supervision requirements.
- Follow all school policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
- Serve as a positive role model through professional behavior, communication, and leadership.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming practice and competition environment.
- Demonstrate reliability, flexibility, and a strong commitment to the well-being of student-athletes.
- Communicate respectfully and professionally with parents by providing brief updates when appropriate, answering questions, and directing concerns or important information to the Athletic Director to ensure consistent and clear communication.

Qualifications
- Prior tennis coaching experience required.
- Prior competitive tennis playing experience at the high school level or above preferred.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Strong knowledge of tennis rules, scoring, fundamentals, technique, and player development.
- Ability to teach and develop athletes with varying levels of tennis experience.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
- Ability to create a positive, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate learning environment for middle school student-athletes.
- CPR, First Aid, and AED Certification required prior to the start of practices.
- Must successfully complete all school-required background screening, fingerprinting (Live Scan), and child safety requirements prior to employment.
Physical Requirements
- Regularly required to stand, walk, and actively participate in tennis-related physical activities.
- Ability to demonstrate tennis skills, drills, and proper technique as needed.
- Ability to supervise student-athletes in outdoor environments and varying weather conditions.
- Occasionally required to lift or move equipment and materials up to 30 lbs.
- Ability to move safely and efficiently around tennis courts and other campus environments.
Dates & Compensation
- Practices and matches will be held on weekdays after school, with the specific practice schedule determined by the Athletic Director and Coach.
- Practices are generally held from 3:15 PM–4:30 PM .
- Matches will be scheduled during the week throughout the competition season.
- Coaches are expected to be available for all scheduled practices and matches unless otherwise approved by the Athletic Director.
- Compensation is dependent on experience and qualifications.
