About the Role
This role can be performed anywhere within the United States.
The Associate Legal News Copy Editor edits copy for all legal beats on a daily basis. The articles will report on court cases, administrative proceedings, and legislative and regulatory actions. The copy editor may also monitor developments and report on legal news for an assigned topic.
As a copy editor, you will edit copy related to important legal developments across multiple topics for daily news production. You will help your team improve the publication content and meet their performance goals. You will also be responsible for writing news articles.
Responsibilities
- Edit legal news copy for clarity, accuracy, readability and style
- Check legal terminology and procedural accuracy
- Verify factual details
- Review headlines, leads and copy
- Apply house style consistently
- Review legal citations and case information
- Protect against substantive editing errors
- Identify gaps and ambiguities
- Maintain neutrality and appropriate legal-news tone
- Perform final publication-quality review
- Work within deadline-driven news operations and meet all deadlines
- Support editorial standards and consistency across the service
- May gather news and write news articles that provide explanation of court opinions and other litigation-related documents following guidance provided by manager
Requirements
- Possess hard news copyediting experience and excellent news judgment
- Have a Bachelor's degree in journalism/communications or relevant work experience
- Have the ability to multitask and reprioritize throughout the day
- Have the ability to understand and explain complex legal topics
- Be a skilled and speedy copy editor and news writer
- Be able to work Eastern time zone hours
- Have the ability to work independently

U.S. National Base Pay Range: $44,500 - $74,100. Geographic differentials may apply in some locations to better reflect local market rates.

Base Pay Range for CO is $44,500 - $74,100. Base Pay Range for IL is $46,700 - $77,700. Base Pay Range for Chicago, IL is $49,000 - $81,500. Base Pay Range for MD is $46,700 - $77,700. Base Pay Range for NY is $49,000 - $81,500. Base Pay Range for New York City is $53,300 - $88,800. Base Pay Range for Rochester, NY is $44,500 - $74,100. Base Pay Range for OH is $42,200 - $70,400. Base Pay Range for NJ is $52,437- $83,763.
