Referral Intake Specialist

Remote (Arizona Residents Only) | Full-Time | Hourly Position

Join Donor Network of Arizona and help save and heal lives through organ and tissue donation. As a Referral Intake Specialist, you will play a critical role in the organ donation process by evaluating referrals, assessing donor suitability, and collaborating with healthcare professionals to maximize donation opportunities across Arizona.

This is a remote position; however, candidates must reside within the state of Arizona.

The Referral Intake Specialist role is responsible for maximizing the organ referral and evaluation process in collaboration with the Referral Optimization Charge (ROC), Advisor on Call (AOC), Organ Recovery Coordinator (ORC), Organ Donation Coordinator (ODC), Donor Legacy Advocate (DLA), hospital staff, physicians, and medical director as needed.

- Communicates with appropriate professional staff and reviews the patient’s medical record for consideration of donation options.
- Performs an initial telephone evaluation with the party initiating the referral call. Initial telephone evaluation is intended to obtain information to determine gross suitability for organ donation.
- Performs full chart review to assess donor suitability. 
- Collaborates with internal staff to manage all open referrals, including daily follow up, optimizing referral outcomes and processes
- Provides basic education to hospital staff about the donation process, plan for continuity of care and progress of referral. 
- May need to facilitate a family conversation regarding donation when this is an immediate need. This includes collaborating with hospital staff to determine appropriate timing for family counseling and conversation.

Schedule & Availability Expectations

We currently have potential openings on both day and night shifts:

Night Shift: 3 x 12-hour shifts per week

Day Shift:    2 x 12-hour / 2 x 8-hour schedule per week

In addition, all Referral Intake Specialists are expected to:

- Work a minimum of approximately four weekend shifts per month.
- Participate in holiday coverage, including two to three major winter holidays each year.

Qualifications

Successful candidates possess:

- Strong critical thinking and clinical assessment skills
- Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities
- The ability to make informed decisions in fast-paced, emotionally sensitive situations
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Experience reviewing medical records and interpreting clinical information preferred
- Healthcare, organ donation, transplant, or related clinical experience preferred

Minimum Experience:

- 1-2 years of experience as an EMT-P, LPN, RT, medical scribe, or previous OPO experience
- 1 year experience with medical terminology

Preferred Education:

- EMT-P, LPN or RT license
- Associate or Bachelor’s Degree or relevant medical certification

Preferred Experience:

- 1-2 years of OPO experience
