About this role
SUMMARY:
The API Cloud Engineer III designs, implements, and operates secure, scalable API platforms across Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Microsoft Azure. This role provides hands-on engineering expertise for Apigee and Azure API Management, enabling consistent API governance, reusable integration patterns, developer self-service, and reliable connectivity between cloud, on-premises, partner, and software-as-a-service environments. The engineer owns solutions across the API lifecycle—from design and automated delivery through security, observability, optimization, and production support—while helping application teams adopt enterprise standards.
JOB DUTIES
- Multi-Cloud API Engineering: Design, build, configure, and support API proxies, products, policies, gateways, and reusable components in Apigee and Azure API Management.
- API Architecture & Governance: Establish consistent RESTful design standards, versioning practices, lifecycle controls, naming conventions, and deployment patterns across GCP and Azure.
- Security & Compliance: Implement OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, JWT validation, mutual TLS, certificates, secrets, threat protection, quotas, and rate limiting in alignment with enterprise security requirements.
- Automation & Platform Delivery: Develop CI/CD pipelines and Infrastructure as Code using tools such as Terraform, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, or Jenkins to deliver repeatable API platform and configuration changes.
- Developer Experience: Manage API catalogs, developer portals, documentation, subscriptions, credentials, and onboarding workflows that enable secure consumer self-service.
- Reliability & Observability: Monitor availability, traffic, latency, errors, capacity, and security events; build dashboards and alerts; troubleshoot incidents; and improve service-level objectives across both clouds.
- Connectivity & Integration: Engineer secure connectivity to cloud, on-premises, partner, and SaaS backends using private networking, load balancing, DNS, certificates, and identity services.
- Technical Leadership: Partner with application, security, network, platform, and architecture teams to define API contracts, review designs, document standards, mentor engineers, and drive platform adoption.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field; or equivalent professional experience.
- Core Experience: 5+ years of cloud, integration, or API engineering experience, including production ownership of enterprise API gateway or management platforms.
- Multi-Cloud Platforms: Hands-on experience with both GCP and Azure, including Apigee and Azure API Management; experience translating common governance and security requirements into platform-specific implementations.
- API Lifecycle: Experience designing APIs with OpenAPI, publishing products and documentation, managing consumer access, and supporting versioning, deprecation, analytics, and production operations.
- Engineering Automation: Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code and automated delivery using Terraform or equivalent tooling, source control, testing, and CI/CD platforms.
- Modern Architecture: Experience with microservices, containers, Kubernetes, event-driven integration, private connectivity, and hybrid or multi-cloud architecture patterns.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
- API Standards: Advanced knowledge of RESTful API design, OpenAPI Specification, contract-first development, versioning, and backward compatibility.
- Apigee: Strong knowledge of Apigee X proxy development, policies, shared flows, products, environments, analytics, developer portals, and hybrid connectivity patterns.
- Azure API Management: Strong knowledge of APIM gateways, policies, products, subscriptions, revisions, versions, named values, developer portal capabilities, diagnostics, and private network integration.
- Cloud & Identity: Working knowledge of GCP IAM and Microsoft Entra ID, service identities, secret and certificate management, and least-privilege access patterns.
- Networking: Strong understanding of DNS, load balancing, VPC/VNet design, private endpoints, firewall controls, routing, TLS, and hybrid connectivity.
- Automation & Development: Ability to create maintainable automation and platform extensions using Terraform and scripting or programming languages such as Python, JavaScript/Node.js, Java, PowerShell, or Go.
- Operations & Communication: Strong troubleshooting, observability, incident response, documentation, mentoring, and cross-functional communication skills in complex distributed environments.
